705 Padlet #3: Can The Giver's society truly be considered Utopian? by Simone Sylvester

There is no wrong answer here. It's only wrong if you do not explain your thinking with details. Comment on someone else's post in order to get full credit.

I don't truly believe that The Giver's society can be considered Utopian because of many reasons. First of all since they believe they have already mastered the perfect society, they are not trying to make anymore changes/improvements. They will repeat this same cycle there going through right now forever and ever. Secondly, no one in The Giver biologically has a family. Even though there are birth mothers, they don't keep the babies they give birth to but instead, they are given to other families. This is a weird concept because children will never really know who they came from. Lastly, no one feels pain. Although we may like a concept of no pain, it is not worth it. " It's better to feel pain, than nothing at all". This is from "Stubborn Love" by The Lumineers. I will never forget it because of how powerful this lyric really is. We see people all over social media and the news that are always getting these amazing things that we wish we had. But they didn't get lucky. Everyone works hard for what they have and everyone goes through some sort of pain through the process. But that pain, that is just motivation to work harder. No one has an easy life.

I don't think this society is a utopia because how can a place where love basically doesn't exist be a utopia. Also this society's concept f being released is realy inhumane. A reason why i say this is people should not be forced out of there community just because they broke a rule or because they made a mistake. Another reason I say this society is not a utopia is because in this society it is ok to hit children and old people if they do somthing simple like a gramatical error.

I say this because there society is actually really far from perfect and if they keep believing that there society is perfect there will never have a Utopia.

I do not believe that the society in "The Giver" can be considered a Utopia. I admit that everything is extremely efficient, which should definitely be in a utopia, however this society cannot be considered as perfect. While lying can be useful when it comes to controlling the public, you aren't supposed to completely keep people in the dark. In this sense people are absolutely clueless. They were basically made so. Everyone seems happy. I will also admit that ignorance is bliss, not knowing about war or having those memories is a wonderful concept. The removing of feelings is also efficient as well in a way. But feelings are natural. They are just a part of life. A utopia is when everyone is happy. Everything is perfect. There are no flaws. Passing all the grief and sorrow to one person? That isn't perfect. At all.

I think The Giver is not a utopian society. The book's society might seem perfect, but to really think about it, this doesn't sound like one. A utopian society, like in the video, is a dream society, but I don't think many people would want to live in a society like The Giver. No one makes their own choices, and no one is loved, so to me this society doesn't sound like a dream.

I think The Giver's society is not Utopian because the teachers shouldn't be able to hit kids if they make a small grammatical error. That is unfair because everyone makes mistakes. Also, no one gets to choose what job they want, and something thats I noticed in the book is that you have to APPLY for a child and spouse. I don't think it's utopian society because the citizens have no say in their own life experiences.
~;-;

I believe that "The Giver is a Utopian society. When you think about it, if jonas had not been given the assignment as Reciever of memeory, he would not have known about pain, or loss, or other deppressing things, that cause him and the Giver pain. This goes back to the "ignorance is bliss" saying, if the Giver said he is not needed very often, then why are the memories needed? Jonas would not question everything about his community, and would lead a normal life just like the rest of his society, until it is his time to be released. I understand a lot of people would agrre that whipping kids is not the perfect way of disipline, but it is somewhat effective, and if disipline is not used parents will be victims to their own childrens, mistakes.

i think the giver is not a utopian society. i think this because in their society on everything is what they thought or what they've been taught to see. they've been taught to see things we call normal not and think it's against the rules. In their society there is a lack for emotion and memories and even though there may be some painful ones, there's still so many great things to remember and to feel. So even though the Giver's society may seem perfect, it isn't

I don't think that the giver society is A utopian society. So far in the book there have not been a lot of warm or caring emotions shown to one another. For example when Jonas asked if his parents lived him they corrected his speech without Answering the question. You can't have a utopian society if there are people or animals in it because none of them could be perfect. Well I mean unless some unrealistic science robot stuff goes on.
