Evidence in the book - Fear

Fear can impact who you are and how you act in society. Ever since the rape at the party, Melinda is fearful of other parties that people invite her to. Melinda is scared that the rape might happen all over again. Her lab partner in science might have a crush on Melinda. When David sees Melinda at the game, he invites her to go to his house for a celebratory pizza. Melinda suddenly remembers the party and makes up some stupid excuse. She does not want to take a chance and have this rape thing happen all over again. "Nope. I don't do parties. No thanks. I trot out excuses." (Anderson 131). When Melinda gets invited to a party, the first thought is nope. This shows that Melinda is fearful of what might happen at a party. Melinda also states that she does not do parties which clearly shows that she is fearful. Melinda does not want to sound mean so she makes up an excuse on why she cannot go to the party like strict parents, homework, instrument practices. This shows that fear can impact how you act in society.

On the first day of school, Melinda does not want to attract any attention to her. Her wanting went in the other direction. A senior in front of her launched mashed potatoes at her and it lands smack in the middle of her shirt. Melinda is so embarassed that she ran out of the lunchroom. "I will be forever known as 'The girl who got nailed by potatoes the first day.'" (Anderson 8). This scene makes Melinda look like a dofus and her fear is not helping. When Melinda runs out of the lunch room, everyone views her as "the girl wo got nailed by potatoes" and Melinda is fearful of what everyone thinks.

Power/powerless can impact who you are and how you act in society. Melinda feels powerless because all the other people in her school have power. Melinda gets her first demerit on the first day of school for wandering the halls. She cannot find her class so she gets in trouble. "I can't' find it and get my first demerit for wandering the hall. It is 8:50 in the morning. Only 699 days and 7 class periods until graduation."(Anderson 6). When Melinda gets her first demerit for wandering the hall, she feels powerless. Melinda feels like she has no power over the school and she feels like school is still a long way to go.

Everyone in the school has more power than Melinda. The teachers obviously have more power but her classmates also have more power mainly because Melinda is an outcast and doesnt fit in. Her only friend Heather tries to be nice but other girls just say mean stuff about Melinda because they feel like they have more power than Melinda because they are not an outcast. "'She's creepy. What's wrong with her lips? It looks like she's got a disease or something.'"(Anderson 45) A girl named Siobhana makes fun of Melinda because of the way she looks. Melinda purposely walks out of the room so she can listen on what others have to say about her. Melinda feels powerless when she hears her classmates call her creepy and say things behind her back because she does not want to go up to them and say anything because Melinda is afraid of how they will think of her and maybe her classmates will think she is weird for eavesdropping. This shows that having power or being powerless can impact how you act and how you are viewed in society.

People can get scared and might commit suicide. They worry about the aftermath of the rape and then they might not be social anymore. Sometimes, people are afriad of what others might think of them if the person who got raped tells others. A rape can affect people socially because they would not want to be around other people and might be antisocial. Rape also affects people emotionally because they feel insecure and worried. They might express their aftermath emotions by what they wear or how they act. Others can get impacted because they might also be judged if they were seen with a "creepy" person and it will also affect other people's actions.
