Summary: This exciting new innovation for health care could possibly change many lives for the better!

A team of researchers from the University of Missouri have developed a custom finger clip device that can measure vital signs, including blood pressure. The device contains two commercial photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors that operate at two different points of the finger, which allows for simultaneous calculations of pulse wave velocity while measuring blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. This amazing new technology is not only helpful for those who need continuous monitoring, but also for those who have severe "white coat syndrome". For some just hearing the word blood pressure cuff can spike their anxiety, thus increasing the their pulse rate and blood pressure readings. This new, very non-invasive technique is much more comfortable and less frightening to those that suffer with these particular anxiety issues. Not only does it help a person with anxiety, but it helps with physical comfort as well. No longer having to inflate a blood pressure cuff on a persons arm is beneficial for comfort as well as those that have sensitivities or complications when compressing the arteries needed to achieve the reading from a blood pressure cuff.

1. Less invasive
2. More comfortable for patient
3. Reduces "white coat syndrome" associated increase in BP
4. Multiple vital signs monitored at once
5. Less time to get results
6. Will not damage arteries due to excessive inflation of cuff
7. Wireless transmission of data
8. Easier for continuous monitoring and reviewing vital sign data trends

CONS: Finger Clip vs Blood Pressure Cuff

1. More expensive
2. Not as user friendly for non-tech savvy personnel
3. Possible discrepancies in readings due to excessive movement and/or technical issues
4. As with a pulse oximeter, there could be issues with accurate readings due to patient circulation, artificial nails/nail polish or deformed fingers/nails
5. Would require more maintenance due to the technology requirements
6. Current testing on volunteers show 90% accuracy with systolic BP, but only 63% accuracy in diastolic BP reading

I definitely think this new innovation has the potential to benefit health care on a large scale. With the right technology, education and the repair of any glitches or potential issues, this could greatly improve how we obtain vital signs. This would be a great addition to not only the clinical setting, but in-home care as well. A patient at home would have more independence and autonomy in their own health care with a device that is very easy to use. There are far more pros than cons and I think that with even more research and testing most of the cons could be resolved.

My Top 5 Strengths: Relator, Connectedness, Empathy, Individualization & Strategic

The first four of my strengths relator, connectedness, empathy and individualization focus in the area of "relationship building". Being a relator makes me enjoy working with others to achieve a goal, connectedness is where I find my faith and it helps me to look at the bigger picture, empathy allows me to have a sense of what others are going through, and individualization helps me appreciate the differences in others and how we can all work together. My last strength is being strategic, so I often use strategic thinking to help me through a process and/or issue, especially ones that might be unexpected more complicated to solve.

This strength can help break the ice and form connections with people so that when trialing this new device there is an ease in transition and communication.
