“Sleep fled from my eyes; I wandered like an evil spirit, for I had committed deeds of mischief beyond description horrible, and more, much more (I persuaded myself) was yet behind.”
61 CH 9
Victor’s guilty conscience is kicking in. He uses personification to describe how he has ran on little sleep if any because of all of the horrible things that have happened recently. He knows in a way that he is responsible for Justine’s death by creating the Monster. He convinces himself that even though it seems terrible right now, there still is worse to come, ("...and more, much more I persuaded myself, was yet behind.") because the beast is still out there and is looking to get pay back on him.

I found that these people possessed a method of communicating their experience and feelings to one another by articulate sounds
Pg 78, Ch 12
In Shelley’s writing she described the monster’s experience and his fascination with speaking and normal life. He doesn’t say “they were speaking because at the time he didn’t know what speaking was. Shelley reveals the curiosity of the monster and how he learned to speak and how he was able to speak to Victor in the chapter be fore in perfect sentences. Having learned he’d been on his own for 2 years and how he has adapted to the outside world and his struggles.

“I lay on my straw, but I could not sleep. I thought of the occurrences of the day. What chiefly struck me was the gentle manners of these people; and I longed to join them.” | 77/ ch12 | This statement is a representative symbol of the monster's life after leaving his creator. It also relates to the romantic belief of honoring the common person. The monster had first entered the village and was perceived as a monster by its people, and by learning from his mistakes he realized to not fully interact with the people he is watching. What the quote also symbolizes is the monster learning, he enjoys these people but realizes that if he were to approach them in his current state they would insult and fear him. However, enchanted by their actions he cannot sleep, and as the wheels are turning in his head he will begin to learn more. Finally, the quote is showing the monsters take on the life of the common person and their struggles and times of happiness. He wants to join them so badly but knows he won't be accepted

“A considerable period elapsed before I discovered one of the causes of uneasiness of this amiable family: it was poverty, and they suffered that evil in a very disgusting degree.”
77/ ch 12
This creates a feeling of mournfulness and sorrow with words like uneasiness, poverty, evil, and disgusting degree. Mary Shelley added these words to describe what the neighbors were like and how the monster discovered what the neighbors lifestyle was. The monster can see that these neighbors do not have much food or nutrition, and are very poor. With that, the monster decides to stop stealing their food, and to gather wood for them at night to make a fire for heat. It creates a caring side of the monster, and his knowledge of his neighbors.

“...often, I say, I was tempted to plunge into the silent lake, that the waters might close over me and my calamities forever.”
62/Ch 9
This excerpt from the passage shows irony that is taking place within Victor. Just a few years ago, Victor set out to defy death. Now he is contemplating his own death, which shows the internal conflict taking place within Victor. Shelly uses words with a negative connotation to display the doom that has fallen over Victor. Shelly also displays characteristics of a Romantic by showing that nature can rejuvenate the soul. As for Victor, however, the time spent with nature only seems to complicate the thoughts taking place in his mind.

“The very winds whispered in soothing accents, and maternal nature bade me weep no more.”

A major theme present in Romantic writing is the beauty and absolute perfection of nature, as well as the darkness contained within us as humans. Victor faces emotional torment and anguish following the death of William, which Victor believes is his fault since he created that which killed William. However, the mountains that he visited during his childhood provided solace which he so longed for. These two major Romantic themes (darkness and nature) combined together in this line create comfort for both the reader and the character in the story.

It brings awareness to Victor’s point of view by showing that he acknowledges that he has done wrong and created a wretched monster. Not only does this quote induce a fearful tone, it also implies and foreshadows that the monster will kill again in the future or commit another foul deed. The agonizing pain of William’s murder and Justine’s conviction are plaguing Victor.

This could add a bit of suspense, but also show the long and indecisiveness of Victor's mind due to the trauma he has suffered. The beginning of the system is about his periods of relative peace and happiness, and is also shorter. The second is more drawn out, showing that the periods of unhappiness, sadness, and tragedy are longer than the periods of calmness and happiness.

I started up and beheld a radiant form rise from among the trees." 71/ ch 11
A gentle light stole over the heavens and gave me a sensation of pleasure is an illusion that acts as a trick on Victors brain. Right now Victor has a guilty conscious with what has happened with Justine. This portrays that Victor looks to nature to clear his mind and brighten his mood. Nature allows him to drift away from the thought of the death of his brother William and the execution of Justine. However, when it rains and the weather isn’t bright neither is Victor, he goes back to having dark and corrupted thoughts.

“Often, after the rest of the family had retired for the night, I took the boat and passed many hours upon the water. Sometimes, with my sail set, I was carried by the wind; and sometimes, after rowing into the middle of the lake, I left the boat to pursue its own course, and gave way to my own miserable reflections.” (62/ Ch. 9)

The boat in this paragraph is supposed to symbolize the monster that Victor has created. He talks about going out into the water for many hours after his family has went to bed, which represents how he abandoned his family and worked late into the night to create his monster. He talks about rowing all the way into the middle of the lake, only to just let the boat go and take its own course while he would sit and think about how miserable he was. This symbolizes how he worked so hard to create the monster, only to abandon it and leave it to fend for itself. The author's purpose of this is to reiterate how Victor tends to care only about himself and his own life and safety rather than putting others first. It is also meant to show how much the monster he created is haunting his life.

He is almost unsure of this creature and the things it may or may not do to society. This is kind of ironic because the creation has to be feeling the same way if not worse. This also makes it hard for the reader because this creation is so clueless and Victor is not very helpful thus far.

Mary brings the winds alive by having it be soothing, creating a relaxed feeling for Victor after everything that he has been through. He had just fallen into a depression and the wind being nice and calm is relaxing to him and he ends up resting on the ground after getting himself worked up again about his brothers death. She uses nature to create the tone that the characters are feeling, because in the following chapter while victor is on the mountain there is a storm coming which indicates that something bad is going to happen.

As the creature is scared he finds comfort in the light. Even though at this time of his life he doesn’t know how to describe in words what he is seeing, the rest of the chapter shows and foreshadows what has happened to creature and what will happen to him.

Quote: "It is with considerable… by sleep"
Pg 70/71
The author uses syntax and diction to further convey the rush of emotions felt by the creation when given life. When the creature is describing the first moments of his life, Shelly uses very long sentences with many commas, each one a new thought. These long sentences reflect all the thoughts and feelings now happening in the creatures mind. This writing style allows us to further understand how the creation is feeling. He has just been given life, and is overwhelmed by emotion, and Shelly reflects this in her syntax. Shelly also uses words with very negative connotations to describe how the creation is feeling. She uses words like “dark”, “cold”, “helpless” and “miserable” to describe the creatures emotions. The use of these connotative words set a very sad and depressing mood, and allow us to sort of sympathize with the creation, despite what he has done. These words coupled with her syntax convey the feelings of the creature.

Quote: “The wounded deer dragging its fainting limbs to some untrodden brake, there to gaze upon the arrow which had pierced it, and to die-was but a type of me.
page 64/ chapter 9
Response:Shelley uses cacophonous words, negative connotation, and specific diction all to convey the complexity of the intense anguish Victor is suffering through. The cacophonous words untrodden and brake both create the nasty and rough mood and tone of the feelings Victor is experiencing during these times. The words wounded, fainting, and die all have extremely negative connotations and cause the readers to have a stronger sense of sympathy for Victor and his struggles, by creating an emotional connection from the reader to the character. Shelley also uses specific diction, like gaze, pierced, and dragging, to enhance the tone of the direness of his situation. This is also an example of a metaphor, because Shelley is comparing Victor’s internal pain to the external pain of a deathly wounded deer.

“Wandering spirits, if indeed ye wander, and do not rest in your narrow beds, allow me this faint happiness, or take me as your companion, away from the joys of life.’’
page 67/chapter 10
This quote creates a feeling of wanting to feel happy. The narrative tells the reader that she wants to move from sorrow to happiness. She asked the spirits to continue to let her feel joy. She asked if they take happiness away they would take her. The tone in the quote is sorrowful but she wants to be filled with joy so she can overcome problems.

“Her sympathy was ours; her smile, he soft voice, the sweet glance of her celestial eyes, were ever there to bless and animate us.”
pg 19 ch. 2
Shelley uses abstract words to positively describe Elizabeth. These words are making the sentence pleasant. This is saying that Elizabeth has great beauty. She’s also very lively and can brighten someone’s day. Elizabeth is also a very caring and giving person. This also shows how Victor perceives Elizabeth, and how much he adores her.

He is devastated to think that his creature killed his brother and caused Justine's death also. Frankenstein's life so far has been full of obsessions that have brought him guilt and shame.
