The Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld, relates to the topic because in the story, all the Uglies want to become a Pretty, which they can't become until you're 16. The beauty and perfection of being a Pretty conquers up all the negative feelings of being an Ugly and gives these teens insecurities. In the story it states, " She'd been an ugly for four years, but a few extra days had brought home to her exactly what the word really meant. Tally peered into her mirror all day, noting every flaw, every deformity. Her thin lips pursed with unhappiness. Her hair grew even frizzier because she kept running her hands through it in frustration. A trio of zits exploded across her forehead, as if marking the days since her sixteenth birthday. Her watery, too-small eyes glared back at her, full of anger". This quote informs the reader of the hatred Uglies had for their body and overall appearance. The insecurities forced them to create the illusion that they're flawed in every way, and that the surgery would help them not only look better, but feel better about themselves.

By reading 'The Uglies', I can better understand the topic because it helps contribute to the idea of everyone's insecurities being displayed to the people around you. In the story, Tally only wants to be a Pretty. To achieve this "perfection", Tally and all the other Uglies have to go through insane surgery, changing every feature and aspect of their body. Tally says, “...I want those perfect eyes and lips, and for everyone to look at me and gasp. And for everyone who sees me to think Who's that? and want to get to know me, and listen to what I say". This statement helps the reader realize that perfection is the only way people could really, truly be happy with themselves.

The creator of this text did get his ideas across. The author did this by emphasizing how the "Uglies" fix their insecurities instead of excepting their flaws. This establishes a sense of relief to set in, though the characters insecurities are still known. Tally Youngblood in very self aware of her natural flaws, driving her to believe that the surgery is everything. This gives the reader the idea that Tally's "ugliness" is a huge insecurity, that can only be fixed through the surgery.

In this poem by L.K., the words display a unique out look on the inner emotions of teens everywhere. This source relates to my topic because the poem tells of a teenagers insecurities and how when people were children, flaws were not established yet. Everyone in the world wants the ultimate perfection, which could never be achieved. As people grow and age, insecurities become more and more apparent in everyday lives. In the poem, the author speaks of these unwanted body images that create the unnerving body hate people everywhere feel.

By reading the poem, the over all topic became more understanding by illustrating an overall feel of a girls teenage life. In the poem the girl breaks her mirror, developing an almost heart breaking moment in the girls life. The teen is so insecure over her appearance that she develops a hatred for herself even though the people around her encourage her self esteem. Shes called a beauty in the eyes of her family and friends, but because she isn't popular, she believes shes nothing. She even thinks of her younger years, remembering how no one was "mean". This all ties to the topic by giving the reader a view of teens emotions and insecurities.

By acknowledging the girls insecurities, the reader is able to focus on how even with love and attention, the girl still feels doubt and loath towards her appearance. The girl "does her make up and straightens her hair", though it's not enough. With age comes insecurities and unwavering doubt for yourself, informing the reader of the topic.

By creating this illusion, Picasso was able to demonstrate peoples awareness of their overall looks. Every detail was known of her body, displaying her insecurities through those simple ideas.
