Sound of Youtube Documentary
Link to the clip

Documentary Statement:

In a world where the importance of the visual components of a particular product is directly linked to the consumption or “clickability” for the consumer, the thumbnail of a YouTube video is the first encounter the user experiences with a particular video. We wanted to explore how a thumbnail might appear in audio form, instead of visual form. We produced a short video that shows a user browsing the YouTube trending page, but instead of getting a visual thumbnail that showcases the content of the particular video, a short audio sequence is heard as the user hovers the cursor above the video title, giving some indication of what the video might contain. However, the user has no idea from what part of the video the audio clip is taken from, nor if the audio clip even is from that particular video, mirroring the use of visual thumbnails, that occurs on YouTube, that has been curated or created to make the video clickable. More so, the audio sequences that occurs when the user is browsing the page, creates a larger audio clip, so that the videos on the site creates an audio image, that changes depending on what videos are on the “list” the user is browsing. If the user is browsing the trending page on YouTube, the audio image that is created will change everyday, or when the videos on the trending page changes. The audio thumbnail thereby manages to create a link between videos that usually has nothing to do with each other, besides the list they appear on.

Assignment 4: #3 Practice of Erasure - applied

Delete?No, Wait!Rewind by Michaela Lakova (2014)

In the piece Delete? No, Wait!Rewind, erasure is the consequence of the participation of the audience, and ultimately left to the morals of the spectator. On big screens, data, objects, files and images are recovered from old hard drives, without the consent of the previous owners, a possible nightmare for many of us having private information put on public display without our knowledge – and this doesn’t need to be files that are incriminating in any way, but a stupid selfie with an aquarium imposed background from my first laptop being shown in this way would make me so uncomfortable. With GPDR, this kind of unauthorized usage of private files thought to have been deleted is hard to imagine being allowed, but artists are often found to be provoked about what isn’t allowed and find their ways to do it.
The practice of erasure in this context, is left to the audience. There are only two responses, publish it online or delete it forever. If there were a third option, leave it how you found it, it would be interesting to see if this would be the choice of default. Because as spectators, we are used to passively criticizing and participating, and the choices presented in this installation are very abrupt. You either need to use destructive force to delete the files forever, or to risk putting someone in an uncomfortable position by having it published online.

(Personally I think I would choose the delete function every time, both for ethical reasons but also because it was the purpose of those files. Someone already chose to delete them, we don’t know their reasons but they were intended to cease to exist, and it seems rude to do anything else to them. Unless of course I came upon something really funny.)
