Three years later, Lieutenant Aldo (Brad Pitt) recruits Jewish-American soldiers to the Basterds, a  unit formed to install fear among Nazis by killing and scalping them. 

Shosanna is living in Paris, operating a cinema under the name Emmanuelle Mimieux. She meets Fredrick Zoller, a German sniper famed for killing 250 Allied soldiers in a battle. Infatuated with Shosanna, Zoller convinces Joseph Goebbels to hold the premiere at her cinema. Shosanna plots with her Afro-French lover and projectionist, Marcel, to set the cinema ablaze during the premiere, killing the Nazi leaders in attendance.

During the screening, Zoller slips away to the projection room and attempts to force himself on Shosanna. She shoots him. Zoller shoots and kills her before he dies. As the film reaches its climax, Shosanna's spliced-in footage tells the audience that they are about to be killed by a Jew. Having locked the auditorium doors, Marcel ignites a pile of flammable film behind the screen as Shosanna's image laughs and the theater goes up in flames. Ulmer and Donowitz break into the opera box containing Hitler and Goebbels, submachine-gunning them both to death then firing into the crowd until the bombs go off, killing everyone in the theater.

The series begins with Bauer working for the Los Angeles–based Counter Terrorist Unit, in which he is a highly proficient agent with an "ends justify the means" approach. This disregard for conventional morality puts him at odds with others until he is usually proven right.^[4][5] Throughout the series, most of the main plot elements unfold like a political thriller, as they lead to deaths, twists and cliffhanger endings.^[6] Bauer uses people on both sides of the law in his attempts to prevent terrorist attacks and bring down those responsible, sometimes at great personal expense. These attacks include presidential assassination attempts, bomb detonations, bioterrorism, cyberwarfare, as well as conspiracies that involve government and corporate corruption.

24 won numerous awards throughout its run, including Best Drama Series at the 2004 Golden Globe Awards and Outstanding Drama Series at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards. Its success spawned a spin-off series, 24: Legacy, that premiered on February 5, 2017. It used the same format but followed different characters and lasted one season.^[7][8] At the conclusion of its eighth season, 24 became the longest-running U.S. espionage or counterterrorism-themed television drama, surpassing both Mission: Impossible and the UK's The Avengers.^[9]
