"You may fool me, but you can't fool God!" (pg 159)
After Myrtle's death, Michaelis stays with George to help him cope with the event. When talking to him, George explains how he figured out Myrtle was cheating on him. He talks about how the argument ended with him telling her the quote above. While saying this, George is staring at the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleberg. This compares the eyes directly to God, noting how it watches over the Valley of Ashes, seeing everything.

"That's an advertisement." (P. 160)
When George tells Michaelis about the fight he had with myrtle, he points to the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleberg. This quote symbolizes the disbelief and disregard for God during the roaring twenties. He was pushed aside because of the human desire to sin. Alcohol and deceit became the god of the 1920's.

The theme that most closely resembles the eye of Dr. T. J. Eckleberg are lies and deceit. The eyes are always watching over Myrtle and George's garage. They witness the lies that Myrtle says to her husband when she says she is going to see her sister in town. It witnesses Tom telling George that he will send the car. The eyes see Gatsby and Daisy hit Myrtle and drive off. The eyes see Tom tell George that the driver was Gatsby.

The immoral actions that take place throughout the story are the events that closely align with the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleberg. Being that the eyes represent God, watching down and judging the human population, and connecting to the theme of lies and deceit. The cheating and lying that the characters do are all witnessed by the eyes.
