I am from a homogenous, rural area (the diversity was the Catholic family). I grew up with a lot of racism and sexism. One of my first memories was my father ridiculing the idea of a female pilot or doctor. In high school my best friend argued with me that Black people are violent and disrespectful. When I was in my 20s my father told me to "not bring one of them home". When we invaded a country around the same time, my entire family sat around my grandmother's kitchen table angry and saying that we need to bomb those "towel heads". The bigotry is engrained and expected from the participants. They assume that everyone thinks like them. I moved to another state and I had two staff members at my college tell me that those kids/people were criminals or took advantage of the system. I hear this sort of thing from family as well.

Inclusion is something I have sought my entire life with little success. Equity seems too big of a dream to reach for, but one I'd love to see happen.

I've lived among diverse group so I think I'm most impacted by Inclusion and Equity. I can't be certain, but I feel at times that I may be treated less than or excluded from certain groups and conversations because I do not have a PhD. I also think that my race and my religion may cause some individuals to dislike me before they get to know me personally. This has caused me to have to work harder at creating professional relationships. I believe that other individuals with similar backgrounds may be experiencing the same treatment.

Because I grew up in a small community, with many being a part of my same religion, I wasn't ever really exposed to much diversity. While I lived in Argentina for a couple of years and then moved to the city for a bit, I experienced a lot of different perspectives and I learned a lot about others as I heard their stories and experiences. I've always loved learning about others and where they come from. This not only has strengthened my own beliefs in life, but also opened my mind to better understand and accept all people. We are all unique and you can only benefit from learning about others and striving to understand their experiences.
