In calvinism it is stated that the devil is real and at work where any misfortune in life is caused by the devil. The Puritans believed that witchcraft was formed by the devil and the witches were put on Earth to do his bidding. They also believed that the devil sent witches to corrupt people on Earth and coerce them into worshipping the devil. The most famous witch trials are the ones having to do with a group of girls that reported they were "possessed" by witches in the community out to get them. The girls would mimic actions the accused was doing and would repeat things they said. These girls would make claims that certain people in the town that appeared to be witches were one because they wanted attention and were bored in their small town. Historians believed the girls like being well known along the eastern seaboard and having an immense amount of power in the court and town. Puritans wanted their religion and life style to resemble how God had intended it to be which was simple. They only wore black and white clothes, ate simple food like bread and water, simple house, and simple churches. After they left England for religious freedom they settled down in Holland for a bit before having to leave there and come to America. Jon Winthrop came up with this theory because he wanted to set an example for Christians around the world and how they should build their own colonies. This theory helped base bible learning schools where men would go to learn how to teach the word of God to others. These schools are well known in America as the "Ivy Leagues" some of these schools that were originally bible schools are Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Total Depravity was the first rule the Puritans had to follow which meant believing everyone is a sinner and that people are born into sin because it's "genetic". Predestination is the next belief that everyone is predestined to go to Heaven or Hell and there is not anything you can do to change that. Limited atonement is the third belief where God only died for the "elect" of people that went to Heaven.
