It took the General and his men six weeks and 650 hot and rugged miles before they reached New Mexico. The General, using persuasion alone got the Mexican troops to leave. The the troops marched on to California where Californians were rebelling against the Mexican government. John C. Frémont rebelled against Mexican rule in the Bear Flag Revolt. They arrested a Mexican commander of California and raised a flag showing a bear sketched in blackberry juice. The going was rough, we hiked over a thousand miles in all types of heat. To pass the time we sang songs, some about the General himself. It was his persuasion skills that let us leave without firing a single shot.
