Mexican Culture by anajha burnett

Culture is a weird thing. We seem to know our own but make presumptions about what it is like to live somewhere else in the world, immersed in another culture. When someone mentions Mexico, I think warm weather, crystal clear beaches, margaritas, tacos, siestas, and fiestas. The reality of course is not that. Mexico is more than a vacation or spring break destination and the country we should thank for, in my opinion, some of the best food on the planet.

Mexican music is very diverse, some that date back to the times of indigenous people and some with unique twists on the traditional music. Banda, Mariachi, Noreño, and Ranchera are the most popular genres, however there are other generes that have developed such as Hausteco, Jarocho, Grupera, Tamborazo Zacatecano, and Marimba-based ensembles. The sculptures are typically used as decorations at special events. Some other important artifacts found in Mexico are the sculpture of Coatlicue, Molcajete and Tejolete stone tools, the Mosaic Mask of Tezcatlipoca, and the two ceramic statues of Mictlantecuhtli. These artifcats represent Mexican culture and tell stories of Gods and Goddesses during the Ancient civilizations.

The education system in Mexico is designed very similarly to that in America. Preschool begins for children aged 3-5, then 6 grades of school follow from the ages 6-14, then middle school for 3 years from the ages 12-16, and high school for 3 years until the age of 18. After high school, students go onto high school. The major difference between the US education and Mexican education system is that after elementary school, students are no longer required to attend. The drop out and retention rates are a huge concern in Mexican schools as only about 47% of students make it into high school.

Much like in American schools, there is a national norm by which teachers and administration abide by, however individual schools have the authority to create their own rules and make their own decisions. Teachers maintain order in their classrooms and students are typically reprimanded by getting a phone call home or having a conference with their parents. Principles tend to only get involved if the matter is not settled or it is a serious problem. The principle also has the authority to suspend or expel.
