There were a variety of reasons for Chinese people to leave their homelands at that time period as China reached an astounding population of approximately 450 million people. The overcrowding of China inevitably led to plenty of social and economic adversity such as an increase in shortage of land and food to inflation and higher taxation on citizens. There was also political adversity at the time with the Taiping Rebellion War that lasted 14 years from 1850 to 1864. On a contrast, the western nation of America had better economic opportunities, especially with the California Gold Rush which brought 300,000 people collectively from both abroad and other states in America to California.
