Some schools deny using seclusion rooms while others say it is a last resort. Nonetheless, these kids are forced into these rooms and are desperation of getting out. Children who are nonverbal would force themselves to defecate so that they can get out of those rooms. A lack of rules and training for how you're supposed to treat special needs children, causes many to be abused and in the worse case death. One child who was 14 years old who was flailing his arms and whistling was pinned down with his face to the floor and died. This shows that we need to have more regulations and a better way to treat these children to have a safer environment for them. If we don't or refuse to pay attention to it more children can be harmed.

Parents who learned about these seclusion rooms were outraged when they figured out what it truly was. This isn’t a normal timeout; parents have constantly been pushing this under the rug, yet in this article, they refuse to do that any longer. This helps give the kids who don’t have a voice or a support system one. It helps bring attention to these problems and that helps them be stopped.

Disabled children are placed in these rooms for hours and treated as if they’re mental patients. Teachers are waiting outside these doors writing down what children are doing within these rooms. Usually, these children are wailing for their parents, pounding on the door, and peeing themselves and they do this for hours within these rooms. Letters are sent to these parents who are indifferent to these events. These parents don’t get one or two every other week but almost every day one parent accumulated over 400 letters from the school about their child being in their seclusion rooms. This shows how often this happens are how people remain quiet and indifferent about this situation.

These rooms are dirty, and isolated, with padding on the walls and kids are usually here for hours losing time on education. They’re put into these rooms for a multitude of reasons yet these don’t do anything but cause more issues for the child. These children cannot stand up for themselves and no one truly has paid attention to this issue. Why this interests me because I’ve seen this with my own eyes. Kids screaming and pleading not to be forced into these rooms to once be in banging on the door, being told to be let out and never stopping. These school systems believe that restraining these children as if they’re in police custody and locking them in these rooms will stop their behavioral problems. Some schools say that they use it as a last resort and others deny that they’ve ever used the rooms at all. Yet it is still documented that these practices are used in public schools. If children are being locked into these rooms consistently and yet there is no change or the problems proceed to get worse means that this isn’t working. Children are mentally scarred by these events when they’re as young as five years old. As some kids are pinned down and restrained with their faces on the floor until they believe that they are calm enough and others are put into these rooms. They stay in here for hours defecating and peeing on themselves pleading to get out. These teachers are waiting outside these rooms and monitoring everything the children are doing. The parents of these children will get letters home about their kids being put into these rooms and what happens inside, yet do nothing. Being indifferent to these situations causes more children who cannot speak up for themselves to be harmed. As these solutions are not working it can lead to more harsh punishments for these kids which can cause more mental harm to them.

 As so few people have ever even heard about this there has yet to be a solution to this problem. What I propose should happen is that people learn what they should do with kids that have certain mental delays. Not every kid is the same and if they’re having behavioral problems it can be dealt with more humanely. You can try to see if they can communicate their problems with you so you can both compromise and solve the problem. What you can also do is redirect their behavior and find a replacement for their actions. For example, if a child is constantly whistling and flapping their arms you can make the kid stand up so they can get the stimulation they need and for the whistling, you can give them a straw to blow into if it’s truly needed. You don’t need to restrain them and place them into quiet/seclusion rooms for hours for those actions as these are normal child behaviors. Some kids need to be secluded as they can be overstimulated but that must happen if the child is willing to consent to these actions as they shouldn’t be forced against their will into these rooms.
