One day she taught a Sunday school class in a jail; She discovered that mentally ill people were kept there and treated like criminals. Dorothea spent months visiting prisons all around and reporting back to her Massachusetts legislature. She wrote about their conditions and how mental illness should not be treated as criminal behavior.
