Treatment of the Mentally Ill

A lady named Dorothea Dix helped with the treatment of people who were mentally ill. One day she taught a Sunday school class in a jail; She discovered that mentally ill people were kept there and treated like criminals. Dorothea spent months visiting prisons all around and reporting back to her Massachusetts legislature. She wrote about their conditions and how mental illness should not be treated as criminal behavior. Therefore, her writings got to many states and they investigated the treatment of the mentally ill people and established faculties to help stop this and give them care.
