He joined NOI because of his close friendship with Malcolm X who was leading the black civil rights activist. He later left the group after hearing about Malcolm X arguing with the leader which was Elijah Mohammad at the time. As we know Ali was Muslim and he was in shock of what his people/religion had done to our country. He spoke in New York about 6 days after and said this,  "I am angry that the world sees a certain group of Islam followers who caused this destruction, but they are not real Muslims, They are racist fanatics who call themselves Muslims, permitting this murder of thousands."
