To help our team get to know each other better, students created and shared slides with fun facts about themselves! It was a great way to build connections, celebrate what makes each person unique, and kick off the week with a sense of community.

Employability Skill: Team Work

We’re also focusing on building an essential employability skill: teamwork. This week, students will engage in a variety of team-building activities and games designed to help them collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve together. Teamwork is one of the most important life skills, and our goal is to help students strengthen this ability while having fun. We took a snack break at the park to play animal charades. Students shared a good laugh with one another acting out different animals!

Gaining Insight: Empathy & Stakeholder Map

Now that students know what the driving question is, we had a few important steps to take before coming up with solutions. Students worked together to fill out a stakeholder map, identifying all the people who might be impacted by their solution. They thought carefully about what each stakeholder might need, want, or care about most. This activity helped students build empathy, think critically, and brainstorm possible solutions that are thoughtful and meaningful for everyone involved.

Our solution is redesigned board book space that includes a dramatic play station, a space specifically for parents, and a ball pit for young children!

Critique and Revision: NUFF Test

After we sorted and grouped all of our Crazy 6's ideas we ran 7 different ideas through the NUFF test. This test determines if our ideas are New, Useful, Feasible, and Fun! This collaborative process helped them narrow down their focus and begin building a shared vision for a more exciting and inviting board book space. Students voted to implement more imaginative/ dramatic play spaces, different building materials such as magnatiles and large legos, and they opted to include a space specifically for parents to browse books and have comfortable seating while they watch their kids play in the board book area.

Once students' sticky note ideas were complete, the students came together as a team to share and sort their drawings. They looked for common themes and grouped similar ideas together. We were able to come up with nearly 8 different groups of ideas.

We gave our audience a feedback sheet to use while students presented. This was a great way for students to get real, authentic feedback! Parents, families, and some of the library staff had great insights and they were so kind in all of their feedback to the students.

This was an amazing week of camp! Our students worked so well together and truly came together as a team to create a solution. Our students, business partner, and authentic audience were all so excited about our solution and the process we went through. We are so proud of all the hard work they put in and we could not have asked for a better week!

We took our top 3 ideas from the NUFF Test, so it was time to breakdown these ideas even more. Students worked in pairs to create more in depth drawings of the parent area, a toy area, and a ball pit!

Our Driving Question

After a fun and busy morning, it was time to get to work. We introduced students to our driving question: "How can we make the board book area more fun to play and read in?" We’re working to design a space where children and families can have fun, stay engaged, and feel excited to check out board books from the library! Students spent some time exploring the board book area and brainstorming some possible solutions!

Hopes, Fears and Norms

After the scavenger hunt, we completed a Hopes, Fears, and Norms chart together. Students shared what they're most excited about, what makes them a little nervous, and how we can all work together to create a respectful, fun, and safe environment. This activity helped us build trust, understand each other better, and set the tone for a supportive and inclusive camp community.

Next, we took the students on an exciting scavenger hunt around the library! They explored the different spaces and discovered what makes each one unique. We made sure to give them time to explore each area!

Creative DNA

Students took a fun and imaginative “Creative DNA Test” to discover more about themselves! Through personality prompts they explored their unique interests, strengths, and styles. This activity helped students celebrate what makes them one-of-a-kind and sparked great conversations with their teammates.

After determining who our stakeholders are, students broke up into small groups to decide what each stakeholder might be looking for in the board book area. They worked as a small group, and then shared out to the whole group with their findings and ideas! This was a great way for students to view the problem through the lens of someone else.

We wrapped up day 1 by filling out our iChallengerUjr. Passport! Students wrote down each of the protocols we went through and we talked about what went well and what we will work on during day 2!

We started day 2 by reviewing our stakeholder map and began thinking of open ended questions to ask our panel. Students thought of questions for children who visit the library, parents, and even library employees so they had a better understanding of what the board book area should look like.

All About Me Check In

Before we began working on day 2, we started off with an All About Me coloring page. Students drew a picture of themselves, their family, their favorite food, and one of their favorite hobbies! As we were working on this paper, we found out that every student has a brother! It was a great way to continue building connections and foster a positive environment.

Next up, it was time to ask all of the amazing questions the students came up with! We had two library employees, two moms, and 5 kids on our interview panel. The students asked thoughtful questions to understand what makes the library feel welcoming, fun, and useful for different age groups. The insights they gathered will help guide their designs to create a more engaging and inclusive board book area for all visitors.

After completing interviews, we took a break and walked to Kilwin’s for some ice cream! Students had so much fun walking downtown and discussing their ideas! This was the perfect midday snack to cool us down and keep us energized for the rest of the day!

We went down to the LEGO lab to give students time to build a prototype of their newly designed board book area. They worked as a team to bring their vision to life and made sure everyone had a role in building part of the space. They made sure to listen to the feedback from our interview panel and included their own fun twist by adding a ball pit!

To build confidence and prepare for their final presentation, students spent time practicing their pitch. They received feedback, refined their delivery, and grew more comfortable sharing their idea. They were getting one step closer to confidently presenting to a real audience.

Students had the exciting opportunity to present their ideas to an authentic audience made up of parents, families, library staff, and community members. Sharing their work with real stakeholders helped students build confidence, practice communication skills, and see the real-world impact of their creative problem-solving. We are so proud of how well they all worked as a team and were able to come up with an amazing solution that will hopefully solve the library's problem!
