This comic shows how even when we believe we are communicating properly, the receiver might not be interpreting it the same way. In this weeks readings, a big theme is understanding one another. In the article, "The Blurring of Special Education in the New Continuum of General Education Placements and Services", they discuss how many professionals implement RTI services differently and that their ideas of RTI vary from person to person. While all of these professionals want to work together to help the students, their interpretation may be very different.

The RTI process helps identify students that may need more support, however, all students could use support based on their own needs. Education should be differentiated for all students. Th needs of all students should be met.

Resource Rooms?

One concept that was discussed in the article, "The Blurring of Special Education in the New Continuum of General Education Placements and Services", was the idea of changing the separation of special education and mainstream education. What the authors mean by "blurring" is to eliminate resource rooms and allow special education teachers coteach and collaborate with the general education teachers. There should be small group instruction and tutoring within the classroom.

After the universal screening has been done, a meeting should take place. This meeting should be held to discuss any students that fall within a certain percentile. The members of this group should know the student as a whole and discuss which intervention process would be appropriate for them.
Once interventions have occurred, a meeting should be held again to discuss the progress of the student. Based on the progress monitoring data, there will be a discussion on the next steps for the student. Will the student be dismissed from RTI? or should special education testing be considered?
I chose this picture because it shows a meeting taking place and all the people involved look invested and engaged in what the speaker has to say. The eye contact and body language shows that effective communication is occurring which is essential when discussing students and when collaborating with each other.

Universal screening is done within the general education classroom. This helps the teacher differentiate instruction for all of her students. I choose this picture, because this teacher has small groups in her classroom. It appears that she is using the centers method in which each group eventually meets with the teacher. The teacher can meet the needs of the students within the classroom setting.
