Germany's plan was to take out France before Russia could finish mobilizing and then put all their effort into the eastern front. This plan is very similair to the plan Hitler used in World War 2 but the Nazi plan ended up being more succesful on both fronts. 

The French border was protected very well meaning it would be difficult for the Germans to invade. Germany, to avoid the French deffence went around it through Belgium and Luxembourg.
