In the short story "Martin", right vs. wrong is illustrated throughout the story. One example of this is when Martin drops something of his and the boy decides to return it to him. As he goes to drop off Martin's item, he realizes that Martin doesn't have it as easy as he does. This theme is important to the story because in the end, the boy learns that how he treated Martin was wrong but returning his lost item was a good thing.

-Kenadee Coffey

In the short story "The Rights to the Streets of Memphis", perseverance is the main theme throughout the story. An example of this is Richard needing to buy food at the market but keeps getting beat up and his money stolen by a group of boys. His mother keeps sending him back to the market and through these groups of boys. He finally stands up to the boys when his mother locks him out of the house and won't let him back in until he returns with the food. This is important because it teaches Richard to stand up for himself and have confidence. It also teaches that he can't be reliant on his mother forever. He has to be self-sufficient.

- Hayden Thomas

In the short story "Thank you, Ma'am" right vs. wrong is portrayed throughout the story. An example of this is when Roger crept up behind the woman and tried to take her purse. Until the woman turned around and caught him, Roger realized that he shouldn't have done that. This theme was very important in this story because just before Roger left the woman's house she made sure he knew that what he did was wrong and she told him to never do it again. She then gave Roger money. This shows that what he did was wrong and she made sure he knew that but by the end of the story he knew it was wrong, the right thing to do was to just ask for money.

Averie Etter

In the short story "Thank You, Ma'am" empathy is demonstrated throughout the whole story. A young man named Roger tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, but instead of punishing him, she shows him empathy by taking him home, feeding him, and giving him life advice. This theme was very important in the story; it was because of her empathy for Roger that his life changed for the better. This theme shows us how understanding someone's struggles can lead to forgiveness and that can have a positive impact on their life.

-Morian Campos

I chose the theme empathy for diverse perspectives for the short story “Encounter with Martin Luthur King Jr.” by Maya Angleuo. Empathy for diverse perspectives helps us be less biased and look beyond ourselves. Martin Luther King Jr. really showed empathy for Maya as he sat down and asked questions about her life. He was very personable and connected with her. He impacted how she sees the world and showed that he does really care about her brother who was in jail.

-Bethany Danielson

The theme I'm choosing to write about is cultural differences based on the short story How to Fight Monsters. Although there are more themes to choose from in this story, I dislike when there are cultural differences in a negative way. For example when Roger who is Junior's bully makes a joke "...Roger told me a joke involving Indians, African Americans, and buffalo that was the most racist, disgusting, evil thing I'd ever heard"(Alexie 5). Messing around even as a "joke" about someones background or roots is a different level of disrespect because it's not just about the person it's an entire community. At the end of the day no one is better than anyone and there should be no reason as to why we have to speak up on peoples race or cultural differences. -Fatima Gutierrez

When he finally stands up for himself, the parents of the kids try to confront him as well, this is when he verbally fights back for his money and for the kids to stop harassing him. It was the story of a young Puerto Rican immigrant in the 1960s. It showed the challenges that she faced based on her race. Even the Black girls were making fun of her. She fell in love with a sweet young white guy. This romance was scuttled by his mother. The Second story was “Two Kinds” which showed the challenges a young Chinese immigrant faced from her traditional mother.

  - Alice Campbell

Throughout this short story the main thing that this family had to do was to persevere through lots of struggles. For example they had to get through the abandonment of their dad leaving and the hunger that followed. The mom having to get a job to provide for her family. The oldest boy had to step into the father role, which came with getting beaten up by boys when going to the grocery store. It took multiple times to get groceries but he learned that he had to persevere and fight back to the boys that were beating him. Perseverance helps us get through challenges so we don't give up.

-Becca Martineau

In "Thank You, Ma'am," the "empathy for different perspectives" theme shows up in the entire story. The woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, used empathy on the boy, Roger, to let him know that she understood where he was coming from and would forgive him for trying to steal her purse. This empathy was important to the story because, without it, she may have sent him to jail or some other thing. She saw him for who he truly was - a young hungry boy, not as a street urchin after her money. Her empathy led her to feed and wash him. This would tell us that not every "bad" person is really bad; they might have a good reason for doing bad stuff, etc.

- Nathaniel Landon

An example from this story is when Mrs. Luella Bates said to Roger “I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son—neither tell God, if he didn’t

already know..." (Hughes 3) Luella can relate deeply with Roger saying that she has also done things just as Roger does. She was able to empathize and comfort Roger that he is not alone he just has to make better decisions. She also gave Roger 10$ to help him get the shoes he wanted, but really she showed him compassion and forgiveness this theme shows us that not matter what you are going through no matter the mistakes you make there is always people to support you and even if you hurt them people have good in them you just need to trust and try your best to help yourself and let people help you.

-MacKenna Camilli

In the story, "The Rights to the Streets of Memphis" by Richard Wright, the theme of perseverance is prominent. The story follows a boy, Richard, as he navigates the challenges and hardships of life. His father left his family, leaving his mother to pick up work. She struggled going to work, often coming home defeated and sad. Despite this she persisted and went every day to support her family. The key moment in this story that demonstrates perseverance is shown as Richard has to learn to defend himself. His mother sent him out to buy groceries when he encountered a gang of boys. the boys beat him and steal his money, so Richard goes crying home. His mother pushes him and he tries to go out again. When the boys spot him, they wrench the money out of his hands and yet again, Richard runs home crying. Finally, his mother gives him a heavy stick and sends him off. Despite being scared, Richard is now determined and he fights back. This story shows as the characters go though hard times, that they get up and try again, which shows a great theme of perseverance.

-Jaden Howe

I read the short story, "American History", The main character describes her troubles with others around her and how she feels guilty due to her lack of remorse towards the President's death. She also portrays how she strongly dislikes many things in her life. She seems to daydream to escape her reality. Other classmates like to target her and she is often referred to as "Skinny Bones". In fact, the only person in her school who is kind is a boy called, Eugene who she talks about repeatedly. Towards the end of the story she is meant to meet this, Eugene but is turned away by his Mother. She seems to be more despaired by being turned down than by the death of President Kennedy. Therefore the most likely theme of this story is, Empathy for Diverse Perspectives.

An example of this is when the boy starts the story by trying to steal a lady's purse. After securing her purse and taking the boy home to wash his face, the woman tells the boy he could have just asked for some money. This shows the wrong way he went about his problem compared to the right way he could have gone about it. This is important to the story because it shows people can be kind and help others in need.

-Amberly Reese

In the short story, "Thank You, Ma'am," we find a great example of how a woman helped a teenage boy overcome injustice in his life. Roger, a teenage boy with a rough home life, tries to steal her purse. Instead of calling the police, Mrs. Jones decides to help and teach Roger right from wrong. By inviting him to her house, cleaning him up, and feeding him, Mrs. Jones teaches him that everyone in their neighborhood has problems. She wants him to know that you cannot justify stealing because of your life situation, and that there is a better path in life. In the end, they boy is so stunned by her kindness that the only words he can find are: "Thank you, ma'am" (Hughes 3). It appears that he has learned from his mistake and will pass it forward.

In page 3 it says, "“I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son—neither tell God, if he didn’t already know. So you set down while I fix us something to eat." The whole short story is about how Roger steals Mrs. Jones's purse. An example is when Roger grabs her purse. Mrs. Jones turns around, picks him up and Roger realizes he shouldn't have done that. Due to Rogers actions, Mrs. Jones takes him back to her house. She gives him a little lecture about why he shouldn't do bad things to other people. She gives Roger dinner and some money before he leaves. This theme is crucial for the story because before Roger left Mrs. Jones's house, she made sure it was engraved into his head that what he did was wrong.

Shiloh Jones

Inside the story we talk about Maya's brother who is in jail, soon after we learn the reasons as to why he is in jail, he is in there for stealing. And so after the backstory behind her brothers imprisonment we see Martin Luther King Jr. show empathy for her brother as directly stated " Disappointment drives our young men to some desperate lengths"(Angelou 263). This shows the empathy and care Martin had for her brother, even though they had never met.

-Juan Drummond

In the short story "Thank you ma'am" by Langston Hughes, the theme of "empathy for diverse perspectives" was the main part of the story. For example, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was walking down her street when all of the sudden a young boy tried to steal her purse but failed. Instead of shaming the boy, she took him home, washed him, fed him, and sent him off with some money. She related to him because she said she used to do bad things. So, the whole story was based of the concept " empathy for diverse perspectives" which was super important because it allowed the reader to really get the message through such a crazy and heartfelt story.

- Luke Espersen

Even though she is being surrounded by people she feels disconnected, when it shows her nickname that it was "Skinny Bones" she feels alone and really wants to be accepted, especially by Eugene. She feels even more isloated because she dosen't feel sad about the president Kennedy's death like how others do. The story shows how feeling is different and dealing with others can make someone feel lonely. It makes us think about how being alone can affect who we are.

-Calvin Smith

In the story "How to Fight Monsters" by Sherman Alexie, the theme that is illustrated all through the story is cultural differences. One event that happens to show cultural differences is when the main character, Junior, talks about his old school versus this new school. At Juniors old school fighting was very common and everyone just kind of fought if you said something they didn't like or was offensive. When Junior was arguing with a kid named Roger he ends up trying to fight him too which takes Roger aback because Junior ends up punching him. This theme is very important to the story because it helps give us a look into a different up bringing and how it can effect others moving forward. For example, while fighting was normal for Junior, it was not normal for Roger and it ends up freaking him out. Knowing these cultural differences are important for learning and now Junior knows how to make sure he isn't bullied without even having to fight.

-Blair Higley

In the short story "Encounter with MLK", Empathy for Diverse Perspectives is strongly illustrated throughout the reading. This theme is important because many people do not have Empathy for the diverse perspectives of other people. Throughout this story, Maya Angelou has an encounter with Martin Luther King Jr who was sitting at her office desk. He tells Maya to take a seat and he begins to question her. He asks Maya about her background as well as her life history. Maya becomes worried that she might lose Martin's respect or lose her job when he asks about her brother who is in jail. Maya admits to him that he got in trouble for selling stolen goods and that he was an uncommon criminal. Martin reacts in a way nothing like she had thought, but rather in complete Empathy for her brother. "I understand. Disappointment drives our young men to some desperate lengths. Sympathy and sadness kept his voice low" (Angelou 3). Martin gave her a powerful speech on her brother's behalf saying never give up on him, never stop loving him, and that he is freer than those who hold him behind bars. Maya has always thought of Martin as a hero and a leader, but the way he showed understanding and sympathy has put her in his heart forever. -Lilly Curtis

In the short story "How to Fight Monsters", the theme that is illustrated is right vs. wrong. One example that illustrates this theme is the quote: "So I punched Roger in the face" (Alexie 24). This quote is relevant to the theme because it shows the main character, Junior's aggression and how this built up anger in him due to Roger's previous remarks. This anger then led to Junior making a wrong decision of punching him in the face which could have easily been avoided.

-Nikole Roberts

In the short story, "How to Fight Monsters" by Alexi, there is a theme of misjudgment in society. This is shown by Junior, an Indian who talks about the white boys at his new school and saying they would probably kill him. At one point he defends himself after they call him names by punching one in the face. But then the opposite of what Junior thinks will happen, happens. No one punches him back, no one threatens him, and no one kills him. They just think he's crazy and walk away.

-Jonah Bresee

Mrs. Jones shows empathy when she responds to Roger’s attempted theft not with anger, but with understanding. Despite Roger trying to steal her purse, she invites him into her home, feeds him, and even gives him money for the shoes he wanted. This theme is crucial to the story because it highlights how understanding others' struggles can lead to kindness and personal growth, rather than punishment and judgment.

-Allyson Eaton

I say this because the story is about a boy who seems to struggle in his personal life as well as financially. The boy attempts to steal money from a woman who is well off on her own, she catches him in the act then proceeds to teach the boy a valuable lesson. At the end of the story she gives him money for what he origionally needed. The woman had empathy and helped the boy in various ways, hopefully leaving an impact so he could go and do the same for others.

-Adelaide Pogue

In the American short story, "Thank You, ma'am", right vs wrong is portrayed as the theme. We see this when Mrs. Bakes discusses with Roger, "Well, you didn’t have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes...You could have asked me"(Hughes 2). This is an important message to Rogers,as he tried to steal, and to many of the readers. This story beautifully illustrates the right and wrongs that happen throughout the story. Even though Roger made a bad decision for some shoes, there was another way. That applies to life as well, there is always another way. Although something seems easier to get, doesn't mean it's beneficial. At the end of the story, Roger receives 10 dollars to buy his shoes, after complying with Mrs.Bakes, and is taught a lesson.

-Jennifer Bolanos

In a small amount of time she learns how he is not being taken care of and she attempts to take him under her wing for a moment, and give him a lesson. But the lesson isn't one of punishment, its from compassion of his circumstance, and trying to show him that the way he is attempting to get things out of life is not the right way. That way leads to trouble, and if you keep your face clean, and help others, your lot might make a difference.

-Henry Jones

I liked how Martin Luther King Jr sat down with maya and showed he really did care about her. He was involving in the conversation and showing he actually cared for what she had to say. Empathy and diverse helps us look at the greater good in people and show that we are willing to show empathy and connection with people. The mother thinks she is helping, but the daughter feels pressured and upset. In the end, the daughter realizes that her mother always believed in her, even if she did not show it in the best way. This theme is important because it shows how parents and children can have different ideas but still love each other.

Grey Nielson

In the story the woman named Mrs. Jones confronts the boy about trying to steal her purse, but used empathy instead of anger to teach him a lesson. Due to her using empathy, the boy ended up changing his ways, and gave respect towards her by choosing certain actions to show that he did in fact change. Her perspective on the boy was that he was a poor kid that needed money for necessities, which eventually led her to giving money to him anyways, disregarding the previous attempt to steal her purse.

-Ethan Ogata

In the short story "How to Fight Monsters," we see the theme of cultural differences, and how they affect our daily lives. In the story, the protaganist, Junior, is Indian in a school full of all white students. One day he is approached by a boy named Roger. It states in the text that ". . .Roger told me a joke involving Indians, African Americans, and buffalo that was the most racist, disgusting, evil thing I'd ever heard" (Alexie 5). When people are a different culture, some feel like it gives them permission to treat them as less than human! Everyone is human and has feelings, regardless of what they are on the outside.

-Chase Daynes

I read the short story "Encounter with Martin Luther King Jr." by Maya Angelou. The theme discussion I am going to discuss is overcoming injustice. In this short story Maya Angelou, who is African American gets a chance to meet her hero Martin Luther King Jr. He asks about her brother and she does not want to tell him that her brother is in prison. She is worried if she tells him she might lose her job, or he might lose respect for her. She decides to tell him and instead of judging her he sympathizes with her and tells her that "disappointment drives our young men to some desperate lengths." MLK sympathizes with her that he understood that it was racial injustices that drove her brother to do illegal things. Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting for racial injustices for the African American people. He helped Maya not feel bad her brother was in that situation.

-Sammie Frank

In the short story "American History", culture differences is shown. Cultural differences are very important for people to understand. All of us are part of a culture and understanding the differences in culture in the way that we interact, speak, act, and think, helps us understand different people and their cultures. Without that understanding, we could develop misunderstandings and even prejudice against other people. A good example in this story of cultural difference is Elena and her interaction with the black girls at school. They each come from different cultures and the black girls might not be trying to be mean to Elena, but because she hasn't grown up in their culture she may feel they are trying to be mean to her.

- Carter Petersen

In the short story "How to Fight Monsters" I saw the theme of cultural differences. The way Junior described his differences to the other white kids in his school was very straightforward, and I could tell immediately how he viewed his race and his classmates races. The best example I can provide is when he said that he was a loser and he was Indian, but he talked about his school of winners and they were all white. Though this was sad to see Junior label himself and limit himself to only being those things it helped me understand how he was feeling in this different world. These words started the story and it helped my see the cultural differences between Junior and his peers throughout the entire story.

-Sophie Venema

The story is about an Indian boy who grew up on a reservation going to a new school full of people who were a different race than him. One example of a cultural difference was when he got to his classroom and a girl asked him where he was from, and he said the reservation. Her response was, "That's why you talk so funny."(Alexie 22). This was an important factor to the story because it truly showed what the boy had to go through simply because his culture was different than theirs.

-Jayda Meadows

This theme is important because if we didn't know what was right or wrong, we would be social outcasts, and would make bad choices in the eyes of others. In this story, the boy, Roger, tries taking Mrs. Bate's purse. We all see this as a negative thing, and would get in trouble for doing this. He saw it as a need if he was willing to do it. Everyone will have different ideas of right vs wrong, and some people need to be taught that.

- Joey Crockett

We see this throughout, but we especially see this when her mother gives extra time and attention to get her daughter into piano lessons. The story continues with many more dilemmas with the internal fight of yearning for independence when you must obey.

When Maya tells Dr. King about her brother being in prison, he tells her, "Never stop loving him. Never give up on him. People see cultural differences in many different ways and it's important to understand their views. Every person on the planet is involved in some type of culture, and it helps us understand the people that are the same as us. If we don't understand other people's cultures it will lead to misunderstanding and views and feelings towards them. One example of cultural differences in this short story was that Elena and the interaction with the black girls in her school. They don't see and understand each other's culture and it led to Elena getting bullied. Embracing empathy, we can learn to become more caring, open-minded, and compassionate of those around us, allowing for a stronger connection between different individuals and communities, this is very important knowing we live in a world that is so diverse with the number of people that have come together. The short story illustrates this by having this caring and strong woman, have a quick conflict with the boy, showing an act of caring and empathy towards him even though he comes from a different place and path from what she is from, instead of acting out anger and resentment for his actions against her.

-Rylan Nakagawa

With junior moving to a new school that is completely white and with him being Indian and growing up on the "rez" there is a lot of cultural differences.

In the short story "American History," Cultural Differences are illustrated throughout the storyline. An example of this is when Eugene and Elena plan to meet up together and study, Eugene invites her over to her house. Eugene doesn't live in Puerto Rico full-time, but Elena does, making their cultures a lot different. When Elena heads over to Eugene's house to study, his mom answers the door. She refuses to let Elena inside after she asks Elena where she lives. She denied Elena because of the differences they have in their lifestyles. This theme is important to the story and to understand overall because it's what happens all around us. We need to see how people get treated differently simply because of differences and notice that.

- Dylan Telford

In the short story "Two kinds" by Amy Tan, the theme of Cultural Differences is very important because it affected Amy and her mother's relationship a lot. Her mother grew up in China and she went through so much before she came to America, that made her believe that you can be anything or anyone in the US. Her mother believes one thing but Amy believes that she can only be herself and she can't and won't change. She also believes that her mother wants her to change herself and become a genius for her sake, not Amy's. There's a lot of miscommunication between the two of them and that caused a lot of fights. There was one huge fight that Amy ended with "I wish I were dead! Like them." She is referring to her mother's children that died in China before coming to America. That made her mother stop trying to pressure her into doing things she doesn't want but in the end, Amy realized that her mother always believed in her, she just didn't know how to properly express it. This theme is important because it shows how much cultural differences affect relationships and it shows how children and parents can be so different yet they love each other the same way.

-Leata Afu

The short story I chose to read was "How to Fight Monsters". The theme that stood out to me the most in this story was cultural differences in what people expect. In this story the main character, Junior, is a Native American and is going to a white kid school. In this new school he expects to get in fights like at his old school on the reservation. Though at the end of the story, something different happens. One quote says, “I had followed the rules of fighting… But these white boys had ignored the rules. In fact, they had a whole other set of mysterious rules where people apparently DID NOT GET INTO FISTFIGHTS” (Alexie 5). Junior thought the same rules he learned on the reservation would apply here, but he never stopped to consider that they might be different. This shows the cultural differences between the Native Americans and the white people.

- Tegan Patterson

In the short story of " Two kinds" by Amy Tan. The story had a strong base for empathy. This story is based on a daughter who her mother was harsh in her childhood, she would expect so much from her daughter and wanted her to become a prodigy. This had a lot of pressure on the daughter because all she wanted to do was play the piano but her mom wouldn't allow it. At the end of the story the mom started to realize the mistake she did and started having a feeling of empathy for her daughter for being rough during her childhood and she apologized by buying her a piano. This is a very important concept in the story due to the many perspectives it has but it shows how empathy can really help someone not feel so much pressure.

- Valeria Covarrubias

In the short story, "Two Kinds," by Amy Tan the concept empathy for diverse perspective is critical point for the story. The reason why is because throughout the story Suyuan the mother has always pushed Jing Mei to what she wants her to be. She never really asked what Jing Mei wanted. She just went with it to make her mom proud. When Jing Mei realized that what Suyuan wanted her to be was not her so she decide to rebel. They were never really hearing each other out. Once they had a heated argument and let out all of their problems they really stopped to think. Suyuan starts to see that her daughter will not be the child prodigy she had hoped. As well as Jing Mei stops seeing that her mom won't hear her. Once they both realize they start seeing each others different perspectives. They start to realize they are different generations and have different dreams in America. They start to connect as one once they start to have empathy for each others perspective.

-Fabian Silva Olguin

The themed portrayed in the short story, "Two Kinds", written by Amy Tan is Cultural Differences. The narrator or the girl was constantly just trying to live her own life and choose what she spent her time on. This thought process is a very American and a younger generational way of thinking. Where the mother who grew up in China thought that if her daughter worked hard enough she could become "great", which led the narrator's mother to force her daughter to learn piano, and study random facts in an attempt to make the narrator become a prodigy. An example of this in the story is when the narrator says, “For unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be. I could be only me” (Tan 10). In this quote we see the difference in both of their cultures and thought processes. Therefore, as we can see in plot and actions of the characters, the theme of "Two Kinds" is Cultural Differences.

Raegan Wilson

In the short story "Martin" by Nick C. Vaca the theme is to not judge others. In the short story Martin is new to the area and the neighborhood boys bully him and judge him because of what he looks like. They say things such as "in the middle of his thin and frail body was an enormous belly..." Where the boys were from, if you were fat you had a good life because you were well fed and since Martin was this way, they immediately assumed. They then have a "battle" and the boys hurt Martin and he goes home. Later in the story we find out that Martin has a rough home life and is very poor. This theme is shown mainly at the end of the story but it shows us that judging others negatively before we know them can hurt people and cause them to judge us also.

- Breydan Jensen

The lady, whose purse broke from the boy had continued to not let the boy go. She took him to her home and cleaned him up, fed him, and even gave him the money to buy the shoes. The way perseverance is shown in this story is how she was trying to teach the boy a lesson while being kind to him. She continuously asked him if he was going to run, he said yes, which led to her not letting go of him. This theme is important because perseverance can be difficult.

"Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes has many different themes but the theme i've chosen to discuss from the story is Right Vs. Wrong. Roger is a struggling young boy that on one late night decides to make a wrong choice and attempts to steal Mrs. Jones's bag. When this happened Mrs. Jones caught him and instead of turning him in she made the right choice to take him in, clean him up and give him a meal. This quote from the story, "When they were finished eating she got up and said, 'Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes,'" (Hughes 3). This excerpt demonstrates how Mrs. Jones took an extremely negative situation and flipped it around to help Roger learn a lesson. By being so kind to Roger she taught him to see the good in people and give them the benefit of the doubt even when they make the wrong choice.

-Elsa Jones

In the story "The Rights to the Streets of Memphis," by Richard Wright, one of the best and most frequently illustrated themes is "Perseverance." Multiple times in the story we see the young author and his family, specifically his mother, have to overcome a multitude of challenges. The boy has to overcome his hunger, due to financial instability caused by his father leaving, and defending himself from people who beat him. The mother is forced to get a job to feed her two sons, leaving her exhausted and emotionally drained. One of the biggest moments of perseverance, is when the young boy fights off the group of larger boys that had been picking on him. Him being forced to fight for the right to eat, to feed his family, and be safe is a perfect example of perseverance in the face of challenges.

-Wynn Allen

In the short, " Thank You, Ma'am", right vs. wrong is a theme that is repeated multiple times. For example, the little boy tries to steal a purse off of a older lady. The lady catches the boy and starts to teach the boy what he is doing is wrong. The woman takes the boy to her house to give him some food and help clean him up. While they talk about the importance of honesty and hard work, the boy says that he needed the purse for some shoes. The woman says that she will buy the boy the shoes but to never steal again. This theme is important to everyone because you should always be looking for ways to do right and never wrong. However there are times when we make mistakes so we should judge other people either.

-Colton Ashby

Dr. King was a very strong individual and had a good understanding of struggles in different groups. His ability to connect with people through his communication skills is something that was portrayed in this short story when he sat down with Maya and had a conversation with her. He left a huge impact on her after just a couple minutes of talking. It's beneficial to showcase different cultures while explaining and respecting them all. Therefore, I think it's essential to discuss and explain cultural differences.

-Shayne S

The whole story is about a kid named Junior who is getting picked on because of his race, how he looks, and the way he talks. He is faced with many challenges, and you can tell that he and his dad are both struggling from it. He had to change schools because it got to the point where he couldn't handle it anymore. But at his new school he was able to be strong and stand up for what he believes in, and it turned out to very good for him and have him not get bullied anymore. -Davis Aubrey

In Sherman Alexie’s short story "How to Fight Monsters", the narrator struggles with his cultural identity, torn between his Indian heritage and the larger society around him. This internal conflict leads to feelings of isolation and confusion about where he fits in. As the story unfolds, the narrator reflects on how his culture influences his worldview and his interactions with others. He expresses this fear of difference when he says, “Those white kids couldn't believe their eyes. They stared at me like I was a UFO.” (Alexie 21). Ultimately, the story explores how cultural differences shape our sense of self and our relationships with others, particularly when we feel like outsiders.

-Hudson Spencer

On many different occasion he tries to look past their cultural differences. The climax of the story is when Junior physical assaults another classmate, Roger, who made a racist comment. Where Junior comes from he's used to fighting. When he figures out that it's not like that at his new school, he gets slightly confused and its a slight culture shock to him -Valerie Luzardo.

In the short story "Thank You, Ma'am." the theme illustrated through the characters and story is "Empathy for diverse perspectives". There multiple parts throughout the whole story in which Mrs. Jones has nothing but concern for the young teenager(Roger) in front of her. "“Um-hum! And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’t you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?” “No’m,” said the boy."(Hughes 1), even within the first couple of minutes Mrs. Jones is thinking of how to help Roger, connecting her experience back to his. We see this theme throughout the story by the family showing how they persevered threw there hard times. Some examples of this is when the mom had to find a job because her kids were starving because there dad left who was there main source of income. Also when the boy would go to the store to get groceries he would get beat up every time but he still had to go back until he eventually came back with the food.

In the short story "Thank You, Ma'am", the theme I found throughout the story is empathy for diverse perspectives. Throughout the story, we see Mrs. Jones being empathetic toward Roger and his unique experiences and perspective. One example of this is when, instead of taking him to jail for trying to steal her purse, she brings him to her home and cares for him after seeing that he was dirty and probably didn't have anyone he could trust or lean on. Roger had never experienced the love and trust that Mrs. Jones showed him, and because of this, his view of the world changed. It made him see that he could trust others, love, and be loved. All of which were possible because of the empathy Mrs. Jones showed him after seeing his situation. This story shows us that not all "bad" people are truly bad, sometime they are just in bad situations.

-Isaac Moeai

In the short story Thank You, Ma'am by Langston Hughes, one of the main themes is the importance of second chances and personal growth. This theme is illustrated when Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones decides not to call the police after the boy, Roger, tries to steal her purse. Instead of punishing him, she takes him to her home, feeds him, and even gives him money to buy the shoes he wanted. This act of kindness shows how a second chance can have a big impact on a person’s life, especially when they feel cared for and trusted. The theme highlights how understanding and compassion can lead to positive change in people.

-Gabriel Olson

The theme I saw in "Recitatif" is 'strife results from one-sidedness.' (I could say 'empathy for diverse perspectives,' but I think the first way is more accurate.) Although the two main characters butt heads for the majority of the exposition, this theme is best illustrated when Twyla and Roberta end up in a protesting standoff, waving signs that say "MOTHERS HAVE RIGHTS TOO" or "HOW WOULD YOU KNOW?" and calling each other "liars" and "bigots." It's at this point in the story that the two exist only to disagree with each other, Twyla hating Roberta because Twyla hated her mother, and Roberta hating Twyla because she hates kids or something. They've completely forgotten about their own side of their story, the first's kids or the second's mom.

-Kiefer Benson

At the beginning of the story, Roger makes a bad decision. Throughout the story, the example of Mrs. Jones teaches him what is most important and differentiates right from wrong. In the story the author writes, "...because shoes come by devilish like that will burn your feet" (Langston 44). This shows that when you succeed by being dishonest, consequences will follow. By knowing this, we can understand what is right and wrong.

-Mckell Haynie

One example of this is when the man attempts to build a fire after his feet get wet, realizing too late that his survival depends on the fire. His failure to succeed in making the fire highlights his lack of understanding of the harsh environment. This theme is important because it underscores the man's overconfidence and the dangers of underestimating nature, ultimately leading to his tragic end.

Brayden Smith

The story is about a High School age kid who is of Native American blood. In the time that the story takes place racism is a very common occurrence.

In Angie Thomas's "The Hate U Give," the triumph over injustice is highly applicable since the oppression of the marginalized communities becomes the focal point. Starr, the protagonist, sees her friend Khalil killed by the police and embarks on a path of becoming an activist. This scene illustrates the theme of defying injustice as it compels Starr to confront institutionalized racism and fight for justice, regardless of the risks. Her transformation illustrates the significance of challenging unjust acts and motivates readers to recognize their role in resisting social injustices. In the end, this theme is significant as it advocates for resilience and the struggle for equity in spite of hardships.

-Garrett Carrington

In "How to Fight Monsters", Sherman Alexie explores the theme of identity and belonging as Junior struggles to find his place in two different worlds. When Junior transfers to Reardan, he realizes, "I was the only Indian in the school. I was the only Indian except for the mascot." This quote highlights how isolated he feels, as he is viewed as an outsider by both the white students at Reardan and his own community on the reservation. His internal conflict represents the challenges of balancing cultural identity while trying to pursue a better future. This theme is important because it shows the difficulty of self-acceptance when facing discrimination and pressure to conform. Ultimately, Junior learns that embracing his identity, rather than choosing one side over the other, is the key to his personal growth.

Porter Anderton

in "how to fight monsters" one of the major themes is sympathy for more than one point of view. this theme is shown through juniors difficulty in understanding and conforming to the cultural differances between his reservation world and his new school at reardan. for example, when junior first comes to reardan, he is a stranger and says, "i was the only indian in the school. ecept for the mascot." this is a sighn of the feeling of isolation he was feeling and his expectation of others knowing him while at the same time wanted to know them. the theme is important as it brings out the significance of understanding among diverse backgrounds and cultures, and that understanding diverse bacgrounds and cultures, that is crutal for breaking prejudices and forming real relashonships.

-Porter Anderton

In the short story "Thank You, M'am" by Langston Hughes, the theme "empathy for different perspectives" is shown. Some ways we can see this is when the woman takes the boy to her house and teaches him a very important life lesson. Her empathy for the boy is shown when she washes him up, makes food for him, and especially when she gives him money for the shoes he wanted. She was very kind to help the boy out like that when she was the one that was intruded in the first place. She was empatic to the boy because she had once been in his situation and could see herself in him.

-Skylin Mitchell

In the story "Thank You, Ma'am," the theme of right vs. wrong is shown throughout the entire story. This gets illustrated when Mrs. Jones decides not to punish and scold Roger after his attempts of stealing her purse. Instead, she takes him home to feed him and teach him a valuable lesson about trust. This is important because it shows how being kind can guide someone to make better decisions. The story teaches us that sometimes doing the right thing can have more of an effect in shaping someone's life than just punishing them.

-Lyndsie Broderick

In the short story, "Two Kinds", the theme was illustrated through perseverance. Throughout the story the main thing was that, the mom wanted her to play the piano but she didn't want to and the mom was super pushy about her playing the piano. For example the mom made her do her hair a certain way or do this and this even when she didn't want to. The mom just grew up in a way, where they push their kids to be the best version of themselves, but the daughter doesn't want to do it when the mom tells her to. We have to push through and just deal with it sometime when stuff is hard we have to push through and persevere.

-Gracie Jensen

In the story "How to Fight Monsters", the common theme is cultural differences. In the short story the main characters name is Junior, who is a Indian kid, switches to a new school which isn't very diverse. In this school Junior sees the cultural difference very quickly. He has always been taught certain set of rules that he has always followed, so when he followed those rules and the other kids didn't he was caught off guard. One example of this is, "they had a whole other sets of mysterious rules where people apparently DID NOT GET INTO FISTFIGHTS"( pg 3 par 26), Juniors experience with this shows his confusion with their cultures. It is important to learn about different peoples cultures so things like things like this aren't occurring often but it also can be interesting.

-Cienna Filimoe'atu

In the short story "Encounter with Martin Luther King Jr." a theme that was illustrated was Empathy for Diverse Perspectives. In this short story we get a moment between Martin Luther King Jr. and Miss Angelou where the topic of her brother is brought up. In Miss Angelou's inner dialogue she was afraid of how he would respond if she told him that he was in jail. When she eventually confesses that he was in jail for being a fence he responds with "I understand. Disappointment drives our young men to some desperate lengths" (Angelou 263). The empathy he felt for Miss Angelou put her "heart in his keeping forever" (Angelou 264). We all have a longing to be listened to and understood, that is why it is important to have empathy for others and their perspectives. -Phaedra Hansen

At the beginning of the story the boy tries to steal the women's purse, but instead of turning him into the police the lady decides to take the boy home and help him get cleaned up. The boy talks to the lady and apologizes and she helps him get all cleaned up and feeds him a good meal. The boy was trying to buy himself a nice pair of shoes so he tried to steal the women's purse, at the end of the story the women made the boy promise he won't keep trying to do bad stuff that could get him in a lot of trouble anymore, she then gives him the money to buy his beloved shoes. The theme redemption is important to the story because the boy changed throughout the story for the better and got a second chance. ----Kimball Wolfgramm

In the short story " Two Kinds " by Amy Tan the overall theme seems to be Cultural Differences. This theme can be seen throughout the whole story. But more specifically when Jing-mei´s mother who is an immigrant from China puts her own dreams and expectations onto her daughter, she believes that in America success is only achievable through hard work and determination. This is contrasted with Jing-mei ´ s desire to make her own decisions, but she struggles to meet her mother's high expectations, particularly in her piano lessons. This theme is important to the story because it drives the emotional core of the story, it highlights the generational conflict between Jing-mei and her mother, showing how different cultural backgrounds shape their identities and expectations.

-Alyssa Cook

I read the short story American History and I decided to talk about perseverance. Perseverance is important because difficult actions yield more significant results. In the story these kids left their families, schools, and homes to save their families, schools, and homes. The fight they were fighting had been going on for years and years so only a huge, difficult action could change this. You can slowly eat at your issues or goals, or you can take the huge leap that actually gets you to where you want to be.

Zoey Peeler

An example from the story is when a jock named Roger tells him a racist joke "I couldn't let them get away with that ugliness. I wasn't just defending myself. I was defending Indians, black people, and buffalo. So I punched Roger in the face." Junior is choosing to stand up for himself and not continue being intimidated by being different than his peers.

In the short story "Thankyou Ma'am," the theme perseverance is illustrated through Mrs. Jones, and Rogers. I think mainly Mrs. Jones is a great way to show this because we she relates many times to having struggles when she was younger, just like Roger is right now. We see an example of this about two thirds through the story, "I were young once and I wanted things I could not get.... I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, Son-Neither tell God, if he didn't already know." This quote shows that Ms. Jones has endured struggles in her past too, but she persevered through them and came out stronger. Instead of judging Roger, she uses her experience to guide him in a way.

-Colton Preston

In the short story "How to Fight Monsters" the theme cultural differences was introduced and illustrated throughout the story. One of the most significant examples was when Junior lists the "Official and Unwritten Spokane Indian Rules of Fisticuffs". This is an important part to the story because it makes you understand first hand that these rules are not typical or standard rules. These rules and expectations are normal to Junior and everyone at the reservations but outside of that, its not. So when Junior is faced with a bully who has insulted him, his family, his heritage, other people and even an animal, he punches him. But by the way the bully and his friends react, he's hit with almost a culture shock. He's left confused and asks the bully ""What are the Rules?"" but the bully and his friends don't understand. For Junior his first thought is maybe the bully has different rules, but has yet to realize that not everybody knows and lives by the same rules as he does. There are many cultural differences, and that can be hard to understand or even grasp.

-Sadie Moeakiola

Junior is a native American child and has left the reservation to go to school at an all white school. He is so used to how things are done on the reservation that it is difficult for him at the new school. He gets bullied pretty bad. There is a part in the story that he asks what the rules are because he is confused on the reservation when they fight they actually hit each other they use their fist and when he hits a student at the new school he is confused because they didn't actually think it was going to be a fist fight. There are many different cultural situations that junior has to navigate it would be very difficult I think.

Jayde Dalton

Throughout the story, we see the character face challenges because she is a Puerto Rican girl attending at a mostly all white school, which makes her feel alone and misunderstood.

In the story "The Rules of the Game," perseverance is key because it shows how Waverly doesn't give up, even when things don't always go her way. Although her mother wants her to be a great pianist, Waverly keeps practicing, even though she sometimes feels bad and thinks she's not doing well. One moment when this is evident is when she's at the recital and keeps playing, even though she feels bad for not doing it perfectly. This is important because it shows how, sometimes, keeping going, even when we have problems, things are difficult, but especially when we have problems, can be what helps us improve, even if it also causes us stress, frustration, and things like that.

The short story, "Thank You. Ma'am", demonstrates the theme empathy for diverse perspectives, in a most ironic and unconventional tone. The story immediately begins with describing a large woman with a large purse, walking alone at night. The woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones finds herself in a precarious situation, as a scrappy, young man attempts to steal her pocketbook. But much to his dismay, he fails at his attempts and soon finds himself in the clutches of Mrs. Luella, unable to break free and run. The boy, who goes by Roger, exhibits signs of neglect, these observations are made very clear to Luella. Not only is he attempting to steal Luella's purse, but his hygiene and overall appearance reflects a teenage boy not being properly taken care of. This is where the theme of empathy takes over the story; Luella forces him to come to her home, where she makes him clean his face and she prepares a meal for him, lima beans with ham. She in a very firm, yet maternal tone, advises the adolescent to straighten up his behavior. She offers him ten dollars, to purchase shoes and throughout the story refers to him as "son", empathetically caring and referring to him as "son" shows the essence of Luella's heart, knowing he wasn't being cared for nor loved properly like a "son" should. After their meal together Luella says, "But I wish you would behave yourself, son, from her on in." (Hughes 3)

-Baylee Russell

In the short story Encounter with Martin Luther King Jr. by Maya Angelou, the theme of overcoming injustice is illustrated through the power of presence and recognition. Maya feels invisible and unsure of her place in the world until Dr. King acknowledges her with kindness and respect. His simple gesture of shaking her hand and speaking to her as an equal gives her a sense of worth and hope. This moment is powerful because it shows how small acts of dignity can combat the larger injustice of racial inequality. The story reminds readers that overcoming injustice often begins with recognizing each other's humanity.

- Iry Brown

Throughout the story the minority child goes to school and has many struggles. He is bullied, laughed at, and left out. He has a very hard time with school because he is Indian and it really shows the perspective of minorities in schools that do not accept them. Its important for us to learn from this so that others do not have the same experiences. We should be kind and accepting to people of all races and people with differences. -Tyler Palmer

In the short story "Martin," by Vaka the theme of empathy for diverse perspectives is shown through the narrators changing view of Martin. At first the narrator and his friends judged Martin based on his appearance like his belly assuming that it signifies something crazy like wealth or overeating. This leads to them acting rude towards Martin. However, the narrator's perspective changes when he sees Martin's home and meal. Looking at the simple dinner of tortillas and water showed him the truth of Martin's poverty. This experience provides the narrator with a different perspective, getting rid of his earlier prejudice and judgement with empathy for Martin's difficult circumstances. - Abdi Haji

In the short story, "Two Kinds," by Amy Tan, cultural differences is frequently emphasized. The mother depicted in the story was originally from China, while her daughter, June, was born and raised in America. This created a barrier between them as the mother wanted nothing but her daughter to be a prodigy, and June just wanted to be herself. Traditional Chinese values center around being very diligent, productive, and acquiescent. Her mother pushes that onto her daughter, thinking that will lead to success in America. In contrast, June is inspired by the American values of individuality and freedom to express yourself. These cultural differences are important in this story because it accurately displays how difficult it can be to be a part of two different cultures and being in an immigrant family.

-Juniper Brooks

She informs him of the difference between right and wrong and tells him that when she was young, she also wanted things that she couldn’t have. First, it is illustrated when Junior transitions from his old life on an Indian Reservation to attending a new school. This is a big transition for Junior as the school he is attending is very different from the life and culture he is used to. Next, Junior feels as if he is less than because of his race. Although Junior’s father reassures him of his worth, he still feels as if he less than because of the way he is treated. Overall, cultural differences are illustrated in this short story because of the experiences Junior has faced.

I chose the short story “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes and the theme “Right Vs. Wrong.” I believe this theme fits by reading “And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s-because shoes come by devilish like that will burn your feet.” This shows the boy learning the difference between right and wrong. I also find that the silence between the both of them, let him feel more empathetic for her and uncomfortable as well which allows him to not want to repeat the act of trying to steal. It’s important to learn in that environment.

Shya Holm

In the short story, “Thank You, Ma’am,” by Langston Heghes, the theme of Empathy for Diverse Perspectives is profoundly important. This theme is demonstrated when the main character, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, shows an immense level of understanding for Roger, the boy who tried to mug her. Rather than choosing to punish him for his attempted thievery, she instead drags him to her home to feed and wash him after assessing the situation. While doing so, she makes a show of quietly giving him moral guidance by sharing her own stories of wanting things that she too could not have at his age, allowing him to feel she can relate to him. This specific act of compassion is crucial as it gives Roger, a poor and misguided youth, a chance at redemption and teaches him a life lesson about trust and kindness that no amount of legal punishment could impart. Ultimately, Mrs. Jones’s ability to see Roger’s perspective transforms a moment of crime into a life-altering exchange.

-Brooklyn Miller

His act was misunderstood at his new school which is all white. Because of that it helps show his isolation when he tries to understand and get through two different cultures. This action is important because it makes Junior recognize and deal with his identity being stuck in between two different expectations of old and new communities. The cultural fight over “rules” of fighting explains that overcoming misunderstandings needs more than just physical understanding.

This is important to the story because it’s a large part of the story, which is mostly about the kindness that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones gives Roger. There is also the fact that the character of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones is shown when she does right to Roger, and is understanding of his situation.

- Ethan Nightingale

The topic of the story “How to Fight Monsters” is “Cultural Differences”. In the story, it talks about how an Indian boy went to a new school, and he’s the only Indian there, so he felt alone, and he didn’t understand the new school’s rules and culture. On page 5 it says, “In fact, they had a whole other set of mysterious rules where people apparently DID NOT GET INTO FISTFIGHTS.” Which talks about how he didn’t know “The Unofficial and Unwritten Rules” of the new school, only of the place he used to live, on the reservation. The story talks about how it is sometimes like to go to a new school, in a new place, with new rules and culture.

-Eliza Farr

In the story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, the theme of the story is cultural conflict is being shown throughout the struggle of Jing-mei and her mother as her mother believes so strongly in the American Dream and she wants her daughter to have every opportunity but Jing-mei values her freedom and being able to live her American Ideals. The clash of cultures become more clear everyday when her mother makes her take piano lessons expecting her to be perfect, but everyday she rebel more and more because she doesn’t share her beliefs of what she wants her daughter to be and she struggles to figure out who she is and what she wants to be in life. The theme is important because it shows the cultural differences and how it can create a misunderstanding also making her difficult to shape her identity

-Felipe Perez-Luna
