1. Develop a self-assessment tool to ensure you have an honest measure of your classroom and good cultural competence.

Understanding students' backgrounds is a foundational step.

Have good communication with families.

Build relationships within the community.

Be aware of various communication techniques. Allow extra time to answer, and do not stare at students to avoid offending them.

Incorporate a variety of ways to communicate, written, verbal, and non-verbal.

Be aware of classroom organization, create a space for collaboration and individualized work.

Create a routine; students thrive on routine as they learn what is to be expected.

Understand that conflict resolution skills may differ for different cultures, and discover what works for your class.

Measure your success and don't be afraid to make adjustments.

Collect and be prepared for feedback. Parents can offer great insight into their child's learning, so don't be afraid to ask.

Listen, take feedback in stride, and grow from it. Every class will be different, and this will help the students be successful.

Share changes that are being made so parents know they are heard.

Keep communication lines open.

Remember, small steps can lead to significant changes.

This is a journey, not a race.
