It may seem like there’s nothing you can do about stress. The assignments won’t stop coming, there will never be more hours in the day to get it all done, and you have to juggle studies, social life and family (and someone of you may even be working part time!) responsibilities will always be demanding and adds on more pressure.

But you have a lot more control than you might think. In fact, the simple realization that you’re in control of your life is the foundation of stress management and control. This realisation is the first step to effectively deal and cope with stress and anxiety.

Everybody has their own way of coping and dealing with stress and anxiety. Some write daily journals, some eat a lot, some seek solace in the fictional worlds of movies, TV shows and books etc. There are no right or wrong ways to deal with these stress and anxiety.

Discuss in groups of 5-6 people and share with each other your coping mechanisms and ways to deal with and overcome stress and anxiety. Post your group's strategies and solutions here.
Activity 1 - What are the barriers to communication and how can we better communicate with one another?

One of the things that I have been hearing a lot lately from your batch is the issue of lack of communication and also miscommunication. Some of you have expressed your frustrations how some people blue ticked you on whatsapp but never reply, some of you mentioned that some of your group members never bothered to attend group meetings and discussions, and that they seemed to not be focused or serious with their work.

I want each group to reflect on these reasons and excuses. Why do you think this is happening? What is causing this lack of communication? Go through these types of barriers of communication listed here - https://www.skillsyouneed.com/ips/barriers-communication.html with everyone in your group. Which of the barriers listed seemed to be related to the communication problems you are facing in your assignment groups?

As a group, now that you are aware that there are such barriers involved that interferes and affects the effectiveness of communication, share your thoughts on how we can all overcome these barriers. Post them here!

We will go through many challenges typically attitudinal barrier and the lack of interest or opinion from the receiver. Also, the use or jargon or unfamiliar words may cause miscommunication among each other as a group.

We think that in order to overcome these situation is that we communicate and make discussion with one another frequently. Also, taking consideration of each other’s opinion and try to work around it for better teamwork. Members should be more open when there are problems and bring up the problems for discussion instead of deconstructing the problems and make it even worse. Furthermore, team members should not just keep quiet if there is anything they’re not comfortable with and talk to one another.

Barbara Hoi (03303820

Yasmeen (0330794)

Vithma (0330927)

Through the group assignment, we had discovered that we had met the language barrier, since there have since there are 5 of us in the group and 4 chinese and 1 indian in it,so we used to use the comfortable language which is mandarin to communicate so we will always like need to repeat what we had discussed. I think that we should try to always speak in English which everyone can understand in order to reach an understanding between everyone. The next barrier will be all of us got differences in perception and view point. It makes us need to have meeting to communicate and come out with same discussion.so when we face-to-face, it also will reduce the misunderstood and it's better than using media to discuss.

Kelly, Thivya, Zi Qin, Khai Nynn, Li Wen

So far the communication within our group was great and there was literally no barriers. But if yes, there is only one major issue. The members are always hungry that while we are having discussion, the mind is full of images with food. Therefore the team end up showing up in restaurants…… Still, my group is great!Vivienne Chen Hue SzeGan Hui YeeTan Yi ChenChua Jing Yit Cheong Chun Yin

There are many things that we do in order to relieve stress. The common method is to listen to, or play, music. We all found that doing so allowed us to let off steam. Another way would be to play sports, as it releases endorphins to help lift your mood and energy. Finally, there shouldn't be any shame in having a good cry every once in a while. Crying only helps to release all the pent-up emotions and you may feel afterwards that a weight has been lifted off your shoulder.
