Tips for reading with your children:

- Get comfortable!
Sit together somewhere warm and cozy like abed, beanbag, or sofa. Sitting at a table all day can be tiring and reading should be a time to relax.
- Ask questions.
To keep your child interested in the story, be sure to ask them questions like “Where did we leave off last time?” or “What do you think will happen next?” This makes the experience much more energetic.
- Bring a book wherever you can.
It’s a good idea to keep a book or magazine with you for your child, especially if you are going somewhere where you’ll have to wait like the doctor’s or dentist.
- Make the most out of rhymes and repetition.
Many children’s books consist of rhymes and repeated words or phrases that are there to excite the reader and put more action into the activity. Have your kids join in and remember those words for the next time.

Why reading is a great tool:

- Helps get kids ready to sleep
Having your child simply lie still for 10-15 minutes can help calm them down to fall asleep. Focusing on a quiet, restful activity slows down their mind and gets their body relaxed.
- Reading helps children learn about their world.
Many children’s books, especially picture books, often bring up familiar events of a child’s world: going to bed, going to school, going shopping, etc. Seeing characters in a story go about these routines gives children more context for their daily lives. Other books can teach children about places they’ve yet to discover such like the zoo, a museum, or traveling by plane.

- Reading together strengthens your bond.
If a book raises questions, your child can ask you which can lead to stories and discussions of your own. This builds more of an emotional connection between you and your child.
