The word 'dreary' means gloomy ,dull and dark.

Mary Shelley presents a sense of fear and creates a tense atmosphere in the famous novel 'Frankenstein'. Shelley creates this atmosphere when 'the rain pattered dismally against the panes' as Victor anxiously waited for Frankenstein to wake up. Shelley mirrors the emotions of Victor Frankenstein as he recalls what happened on the night he brought a monster to life, through the use of weather. Pathetic Fallacy is used to describe the weather and for it to reflect the narrators emotional state. The word 'pattered' creates an eerie and unsettling atmosphere because it uses sound to directly relate to the fact that someone is constantly knocking at the window. The author implicitly creates a creepy atmosphere which is intended to terrify the reader but also hooking them on so that they want to know what happens next. Shelley creates an eerie atmosphere by describing the night as a 'dreary night of November'. The word dreary is defined to be depressingly dull, bleak and repetitive. As Victor Frankenstein is recalling the event, the word 'dreary' suggests that something terribly wrong is about to occur. Shelley intended to create an unsettling atmosphere as the moth of November is associated with utter dismay and negativity. The reader feels a sense of anxiety as they read on.

Shelly creates a tense and horrifying atmosphere in the extract of Frankenstein. The phrase “the rain pattered dismally against the panes”, suggests that the rain is mirroring or reflecting on Victor Frankenstein’s mood. This illustrates Victor feels miserable and gloomy since he failed miserably at creating the ‘perfect’ human being after 2 years of it in the making. The device that is being used in the phrase is pathetic fallacy which is a type of device that mirrors a character’s mood. The readers would have sympathy for Victor Frankenstein after his failure. Shelly is wants to make it a tense environment to show the gothic nature of the book. Another phrase “dull yellow eye” illustrates that the creature that Victor Frankenstein made isn’t normal. "miserable monster" is an example of powerful adjective and alliteration. The definition of 'miserable' in this quotation is used to report how angry and disappointed Victor is with his creation. He describes his creature as a 'monster' which is presented as something horrid. Miserable suggests wretchedly unhappy or uncomfortable. When Victor narrates his creation as an ugly, daunting beast, he's trying to reveal to the readers how aggrieved he is and how his 'perfect' construction.

Shelley uses language to create a sense of fear and tension in this extract. This is shown by implying the miserable creature Victor had created has a “dull yellow eye”. Firstly the word “dull” has been used to describe Frankenstein’s eye, the literal meaning of dull is lacking interest and that suggests that the creature has no life in it, the word “yellow” was also used it implies that Frankenstein has a different eyecolor to what it’s supposed to be, eyes are the window to the soul and Shelley used these these words show that Frankenstein isn’t a human, this makes the reader question what he is. As Victor is recalling the night of when Frankenstein came to life he implied that the rain “patterned dismally against the panes”. The word “patterned” simply means a light repetitive tapping sound, this word suggests that the rain almost sounds like someone is tapping on his window, which creates an eerie feeling. Additionally the word “dismally” suggests that Victor was feeling melancholic. The language technique Shelley used here is pathetic fallacy and it is using the weather to express your mood or tone, in this case it is quite gloomy and depressing. This makes the reader more intrigued to the story, which then builds on tension.

The word demonical means demon or evil spirit, the word corpse means body. The author has compared Frankenstein with a demon or an evil spirit which suggests that he was evil and a devil body. In this the author had used a metaphor it has been used to create imagery. The effect on the reader is to make the reader imagine how frankestian looks like by the word demonical and the word corpse. This creates fear and creates a tense atmosphere. “Dreary night” this is usaully used to creates a sense of fear since dreary means dull and dark which shows how terrifying it was outside. Here the author has used pathetic fallacy to make an eerie atmosphere. The effect on the reader feel how the weather and the time it was.

Question: How does Shelley use language to create a sense of fear and tension in this extract?

Mary Shelley initiates a sense of fear and tension using the atmosphere/appearance of the monster she has described in her popular novel, "Frankenstein". This is suggested when she claims that the "rain pattered dismally against the panes." This use of pathetic fallacy suggests that the weather mirrors Dr. Frankenstein's mood as he discovers his creation has failed. The literal meaning is that the rain is thumping against the window pane as a storm is brewing. This indicates that the "pattering" sound resembles that of tapping. This creates an eerie mood that is meant to mystify and scare the reader. It can be supported by the powerful adjective, that also links to pathetic fallacy, which is "dreary". The word "dreary" is defined as gloomy. This creates suspense, convincing the reader to continue on. Shelley also creates an unsettling atmosphere through the monster's "dull yellow eye." A normal human being does not have yellow eyes, in turn frightens the reader. This is supported by the names Dr. Frankenstein calls his creation, such as "the wretch".

It is also imphasised when victor says 'demonical corpse ' this suggests that victor is describing the creature Frankenstein as a demon , a demon is a supernatural character and is usually associated with evil spirits, the spine-choking this is that it is known to be able to posses things, there is also a corpse which makes it mysterious , it makes the reader feel cold and eary , the author intentions are to create a mystifying atmosphere , the device used is powerful adjectives it is used to tell us about the character .this shows that Mary Shelly creates tension and frear In the extract .

She creates these emotions when she says that "the rain pattered dismally against the panes". This is an example of Pathetic Fallacy and it mirrors Victor Frankenstein's emotions which in this case are anxious and apprehensive by using nature and the weather. Victor is nervous because he has just finished his experiment of attempting to make the "perfect human" and he is waiting for it to wake up, not knowing if it will work or not..The fact that the words "pattered" "dismally" are used shows that Victor Frankenstein was in a stressful situation and also foreshadows that something bad will happen because of how dark and negative the atmosphere is. The word "pattered" describes rain tapping on the windows repetitively and the word "dismally" means in a gloomy or depressed manner. Which creates an image in the readers mind of a dark night and the slow, gloomy rainfall repetitively tapping on Victors window. This puts the reader in an unsettling and suspenseful position because they can almost feel that whatever happens, won't end well.
