England started the Church of England after breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church in 1500, expecting everyone to be a part of this new church, yet a group called Puritans wished to, as the name says, purify the church and practice religious freedom. Ironically, after a group of Puritans went on their way to the new colonies, they were very strict on their fellow Puritans to follow Puritanism.
Eric Foner.

The witch trials first began when young women were said to have been possessed by a devil. Those possessed were said to have the ability to harm others through the devil's practice. The first in the American colonies first appeared after King William's War, when Reverend Parris' daughter and niece began to have spasms and unordinary behavior, to which a doctor diagnosed as the supernatural. The girls then blamed the infection coming from 3 women. At one of the interrogations, one of the accused women claimed that there were others in service of the devil with her to act against the Puritans, and gave her power in return for loyalty. The trials began to spread as the accused continuously named others.
History.com Editors.
