In my opinion this phase is very important because it shows the main areas of enquiry developed. They are language transfer, linguistic universals, second languge pragmatics and input/interaction. It was also in this phase that SLA reached a lot of established disciplines. They are linguistics, sociolinguistics and dircourse analysis. It was possible to investigate different aspects of learner-language and learning. According to Ellis, this phase was more theory then research. She also mentioned that it was in this phase that the first proposal for task-based language teaching appeared. I use it a lot in my classes because students learn in a meaninful way.

This phase is also important because socialcultural theory give enphasis to the role that mediation is very importante when a person starts developing and absorbing new knowledge. It also shows the importance of interaction. We see this during the pandemic. During the lockdown when we were just having online classes, it was very difficult to teach, and to learn, because there was not a lot of interaction. In the school I work, we start having presential classes in February. It was possible to see how interaction is important when we talk about learning a second language.
