There is a read and respond portion to the resource. The students read the passage and respond to the question using whatever strategy the school has to break apart what the question is asking. The questions are by day and usually are an extension of larger passage you are reading.

There is no teacher modeling for HOW to understand a reading comprehension skill. Beyond the anchor chart visuals and the teacher questions in the TeachingPal (which are great), there is no guidance for teachers to "think aloud" or respond when students hear the lesson but still do not understand how to apply the skill.

HMH writing workshop lessons do not have direct guidance for teacher modeling of skills. There are only few skills lessons per unit. This is an area of growth for the HMH materials.

The foundational skills lessons do not follow a scope and sequence aligned to the science of reading. It doesn't make sense in 3rd grade to start with long vowel patterns but then go back and teach short vowel sounds later.
