What Does International Mindedness Mean to Me?

To say that a person is international minded, to me means that they view all humans around the globe as related to themselves. Transcendent of differences in gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion is the human family. From there, there is an appreciation of what makes others different from oneself, such as nationality, culture, or race, as a means to expand one's human experience and knowledge.

What Does It Mean To Be A Global Citizen?

A global citizen is a person who views themselves not only as a participant in the issues of importance to their locale, nation or continent, but to broaden their participation in issues of importance to the entire world. A global citizen is not only well-informed about the issues of importance around the world but feels engaged and affected by the impact of events that occur worldwide. From that engagement comes an urgency to inform and take action to increase the well-being of all global citizens while respecting their individual culture.

How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

I believe that the two group 4 subjects offered at my school, biology and environmental systems and societies, provide many opportunities to prepare students for global citizenship. Science is global by nature. We are all of the same species. We all interact with other species of life. We all require the same resources to live. Any scientific discoveries that occur anywhere benefit the entire human race. Therefore, it is a matter of bringing in examples of humanity, (genetics, human development, environmental issues, etc), from all around the globe and explicitly supporting students in their journey to connect the commonality of human experience. Then, it is necessary to expose students to how various countries and cultures apply their scientific knowledge in different ways to benefit their society. Finally, exposing students to the beauty of the Earth and connecting that to how the Earth supplies resources for our human needs and how we may protect the Earth by gathering and using those resources in a sustainable manner is very necessary.

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

Roughly half of the students in our school have a familial background in various cultures and have traveled to other countries. The other half are long-standing American families without much exposure to the rest of the world through travel. By careful orchestration of classroom discussion, it is possible to broaden the minds of the students to both views. One of our MYP Humanities teachers has set up various Skype calls with classrooms in other countries to allow open discussions between students as well as experts in a topic they are discussing. I would very much like to facilitate similar opportunities for my students as there is so much learning that occurs on both sides of those experiences from the mundane exposure that dismantles stereotypes to the mind stretching exchange of ideas and knowledge. Learning about the issues of importance and how it affects another population broadens students' perspectives and helps them to create a relationship with others in the world and the world itself.

How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

By introducing the concept of global citizenship and asking them to define it for themselves as you have done here for me, I believe that most if not all students will begin to grasp the importance of international understanding. It will then simply be a matter of introducing and exposing students to the international connections of environmental issues or the universality of humanity among all people, for example. Finally, students can bring to the discussions their own examples of other countries and/or cultural views, knowledge or application pertaining to a specific topic.
