2. Briefly explain how you could share a bone game in a daycare setting. Why is this an important activity to share with young children?

Today I learnt a new word in Inuktitut, it is Silamisiutiit. It means it’s a chair for elders to sit on outside.

In this bone game we gather all the bones together, we share and guide them through this so our young ones can learn our tradition.

It’s important that our young children view and learn these Inuit games because our generation now have forgotten our traditional game.

In this game I would let the children watch us do the bone game and explain to them if I shake the bag and start pulling the string if I get 1 or 2 I get to keep them and try get all to make an igloo, people , dogs and sled, gramma and grappa and their chiars I guess in order to win.

In this game I would explain to the children this is the old days game and they never had the toys they have right now and they really enjoyed what they had, and explain that they played with imaginary with the bones like ‘’parents, siblings, chair, igloo, sleds & dogs etc…

This is not the only game they played, there were other games they played at nights - the string game, ayagaq.

It is important for kids, to know some knowledge about bone game because it’s from the old days- most kids at daycare wouldn’t know because it wasn’t taught. I think it would be important to show/teach some patience for this game.

I could share a bone game in a daycare setting by asking an elder to come to the daycare with bones and explain how to play and which bone is which. It is an important activity to share with young children to help teach them to use their imagination and to keep the Inuit culture alive.

I don’t think I would be able to share this game myself in a daycare, I would neeed to learn how to play this in order to teach it to the children. But I think it is very important that we all learn these games as educators, that way we are able to carry on our tradition.

I learnt the word “ Angutitiavak” is a Inuktitut word for “ handsome “ in maybe Baffin area.

Watching the video of the ladies doing bone games with bones, make me realize that we can use anything to use our imagination. Back then they didn’t have toys so they used bones or anything to use for imagination. I would need to watch more videos to teach the bone games at daycare.
