Kodaly and Bartok going out into Hungary to record folk songs always makes me think of The Carter Family. A.P. Carter did the same thing in the Appalachian mountains but for the purpose of his family band having material to record.

Bate Bate can be played as a clapping game as well. In first grade, I teach it with just a 2 part pattern, lap/together, and then hands together on “uno, dos, tres”. When they spell Chocolate, they clap their partner’s hands. For 2nd grade, I make the pattern harder by going “lap/together/out/together”.

I wish we could start music lessons in pre-k and have local baby classes. The kids really do come to us “musically starved” for the most part in this age of “music consumerism”.

I enjoyed the music history refresher today! More importantly, all the history I learned today really helped me to see how music education has developed to best meet the needs of students from so many different countries!

I loved the sequencing for learning "Bate Bate Chocolate" while playing a game. I can't wait to try it with my own students.

I'll say this - I was never a huge fan of music history. I struggled through it. But I really enjoyed the history lesson yesterday!

I love the encouragement of lifelong musicality - being tuneful, beatful, and artful past high school.

I've done some rote teaching in my day. I've used some of similar techniques. I love the idea of giving the singers something to do while they are listening.

Pacing at the secondary level could move very quickly. If you see your kids daily, a unit could be covered in 1 week.

I really loved the improvisation with constraints where 4 fingers were held up, and students had rules they had to follow when improvising 4 consecutive solfège syllables.

It’s so “z-c” to read quarter rests!

Don’t ever forget to be artful! We are all musicians who happen to also be educators. I truly believe our students mirror our artfulness, and it’s so easy to get into the thick of the year and only worry about notes, rhythms, and checking boxes. Artfulness should be evident throughout.

Glad to announce my husband's grandmother seems to be doing alright, just a bit confused. Her levels are improving and the doctors are sure she'll recover well! Sorry I missed dinner I hope you all had fun!

Breathe for singing cue already encourages looking at a conductor.

Curwen hand signs are not necessary if your students are truly getting that full ear training before eye, but can be a help for those who need it.

I didn’t know Johnny Works with One Hammer was a 6/8 song. I learned it somewhere else as a 2/4 song.

I really liked the I’s the By’s game and Let Us Chase the Squirrel. Sometimes I have trouble visualizing the games as written instructions so playing them and the videos are very helpful.

Learning about how lesson planning is incorporated helped. I think I don’t always do the best job of making sure I am preparing past, present, AND future activities.
