It makes me want to dive back into The Tuneful, Beatful, Artful Music Teacher podcast and her fabulous interviews.

Kodaly and Bartok going out into Hungary to record folk songs always makes me think of The Carter Family. A.P. Carter did the same thing in the Appalachian mountains but for the purpose of his family band having material to record.

Bate Bate can be played as a clapping game as well. In first grade, I teach it with just a 2 part pattern, lap/together, and then hands together on “uno, dos, tres”. When they spell Chocolate, they clap their partner’s hands. For 2nd grade, I make the pattern harder by going “lap/together/out/together”.

I wish we could start music lessons in pre-k and have local baby classes. The kids really do come to us “musically starved” for the most part in this age of “music consumerism”.

My reflection from today - I am so very excited to have this training for our teachers here in Bryant. When I found John Feierabend's work about 10 or so years ago, I knew I had found a curriculum that was truly the best for students. Backed by research, igniting the imagination and allowing students to be a part of musicing makes for the best musical environment. I had taught students "about music" for a long time whereas FSIM & CS is doing music. The beautiful thing about CS is that students learn the language of music in the same manner that they naturally learn language itself. I hope that all our teachers in Bryant will embrace what we are learning. Let's all drink the kool-aid cause it's not just fluffy. This is the BEST for our students because it truly allows them to be a part of music and dig deep into understanding it. Though this material is a review for me, I know I will learn new things and new ways to do it even better!

Wow!! I am in so much awe of the elementary world! I love that Bryant School District is adopting CS and hopefully FISM. I didn’t realize the applicability of CS to the secondary level, which is something I learned today. The Pedagogy/History was my favorite part of learning, as I am fascinated with the why: why is music important to the schools? Why should we as a school district support music? They are valid questions that, unfortunately, are being asked and pondered in other states that do not value a well-rounded music education. Something I’ve noticed is the increased use of passive music education (i.e. Quaver-only classrooms). So glad to see so much active and fun music making in Bryant! Looking forward to bringing my knowledge learned to Baylor in the fall!

And it allows me to further appreciate and use every second I have with my students.

-Students singing in class every day is very important.

-I appreciate the music history refresher, because if we understand the past, we can understand where we want to take our students in the future.

-Sequencing is very important and is something we are working on in the middle school band department. This continues to support what we have known is key to student success.

The amount of resources and databases we learned was AMAZING! I definitely will be utilizing the Feierabend Repertoire Database in my future classroom (elementary and middle school). I'm loving the amount of instructional tools and games I learned today are irreplaceable. Always incorporate Unit 4 when doing Units 1 & 2. Yay!

Giving them an order (note head, stem, beam) will allow for higher levels of success when notating.

I loved the fly swat game! It’s proof that age is relative. Kids of all ages deserve to have fun when learning.

Child-like v. Childish: Frame activities as child-like and buy in will be easier.

We are all musicians who happen to also be educators. I truly believe our students mirror our artfulness, and it’s so easy to get into the thick of the year and only worry about notes, rhythms, and checking boxes. Artfulness should be evident throughout.

There is a reason it took this long for something like CS training to happen for our district. We needed the right people at the right time, and there you all were! My heart is full seeing all the joy that was had this week and I know your students are going to feed off your joy.

If you need anything - I can laminate, cut, sort, assemble while you are trapped in meetings. I can’t get paid for anything until November. :) Feel free to text or call: 501.258.1938. Delynne23@gmail.com or westd@obu.edu
