I am guilty of thinking that research needs to look or sound a certain way (academically perfect). Adding like my favorite music artist's song and relating to the research sounds like a fun time (If applicable).

I really appreciate how Dr. Varga framed his research as open-ended, collaborative, and connected to personal passion. I found your discussion of post-qualitative inquiry especially interesting, particularly the idea of considering non-human elements, like space, materials, and environment, in the learning process. Your encouragement to take risks and bring creativity into research really stood out to me, and it’s a good reminder that meaningful inquiry isn’t just about proving assumptions but about exploring new possibilities.

I felt like he removed a daunting idea I had stewing in the grooves of my brain by mentioning that it can be so personalized that you could talk about a thing that interests you, such as a tv show. I appreciated that he mentioned we have to take risks with our research and that it is not always about affirming. This interview has shown me to keep an open mind and to test things out as I start this journey. Thank you!

Thank you Dr. Varga for taking the time to discuss inquiry and research! I loved your classes in the credential program and was excited to hear your thoughts as I enter the Masters program.

Some of the things that were big takeaways for me was when Dr. Varga discussed thinking of inquiry as a process. So often, we are focused on the product or result of our work, rather than the process itself. I think undertaking a research inquiry can be intimidating for a lot of people. I often feel like I have some sort of responsibility to have an answer, but Dr. Varga's reminder that valuable inquiry will produce more questions than answers was helpful. His focus on research being a collaborative process was also a great reminder. I think in the online format, it is easy to feel alone in your MA program, but knowing that collaboration is a part of it helps me feel more confident as I undertake the Masters program.

Also, can say that his recommended book is very good! Read it if you can! Thanks again Dr. Varga!

That is an area I am deeply passionate about.

I also valued the discussion on injustices in education in education, which directly affect the students I work with every day. Finally, I found it helpful to be reminded that research should not be about affirming our own opinions, but instead about approaching ideas with openness and curiosity.

I agree because if you choose a topic that doesn't interest you could be difficult to research, as well as not be fun to work on. I also liked how, at the end of the video, he mentioned don't be afraid to bring in music, poetry, your favorite novel, and an artist for research, which I found very interesting and had never thought about until now. Overall, Dr. Varga's message was very helpful, and I appreciate his advice.

Dr. Varga’s interview detailed how deeply philosophical research in education can be. I appreciated that he shared how his own doctoral work in social studies education was rooted in theoretical concepts, such as using ideas like ghosts and hauntings to challenge traditional ways of thinking about time, space, and matter.

One of the takeaways for me was the importance of understanding the philosophical foundations of research. For example: ontology (the study of being), epistemology (the study of knowing), and axiology (the study of values). As a student working toward a Master's in Education, this really made me reflect on the kind of research I want to do. It’s not just about choosing a topic but it’s also about thinking critically about the values, assumptions, and methods behind the work.

As a social studies teacher, I had the privilege of taking several courses with Dr. Varga at Chico State. Throughout those classes, we shared many meaningful discussions about social justice and its place not only in the classroom, but also in the broader community that schools serve. Those conversations really shaped the way I think about my role as an educator not just teaching content, but fostering equity and awareness in the spaces I work.

I especially appreciate Dr. Varga’s words about choosing a research topic that we are genuinely passionate about. That advice has stuck with me, because I’ve found that when my research connects with my values and experiences, the work becomes more authentic, engaging, and impactful.

In watching the interview, I had some of the following statements stick with me:

Research is a collaborative endeavor.

Inquiry and what it may produce for our students. (Especially with students today who I feel struggle in thinking for themselves and who are so used to looking up every answer to their questions).

Overall, I loved the notion of how research and inquiry can be a creative process.

I really liked how Dr. Varga expressed how there are no limitations on your research. He explained that the only limitations on what you can research is the limitations that you create. This expresses the freedom we can have with our research which is relieving.

A few key takeaways that resonated with me after watching Dr. Varga's video interview was the acknowledgement of getting feedback from people who aren't familiar with your research method. He pointed out that you can expect criticism. I also appreciated that he encouraged us to find a topic that we are passionate about which makes sense as we will be working with that problem over the course of the program and it helps to prepare us for our thesis. Finally, he stated that we need to be able to take risks with our research/thinking. Research shouldn't be solely what we think it should look like. He is encouraging us to be open-minded.
