Dear Ma'am Mai,

Happy Birthday!!!

I've always questioned my being in UP-- I felt out of place, inadequate, and inferior.

But I learned so many different things from you; things about the different people of the world and of our country, and things about myself as well.

Because of you, I learned, and am now teaching, students how to nuance various situations and events current and past.

Because of you and AFS2014 and the Anthro department, I felt like I had a place in our prestigious university.

It's been 3 years since field school, but I reminisce about it almost every single day. The littlest things remind me of one of the best times of my life; from the sun shining in a particular way, to food tasting similar to what we had in CDO.

I truly appreciate you taking the time to drink with me because I was too sick to go out with everyone else on their free night out-- Chanty is still jealous that I got to spend that much time with you HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ma'am Mai, I hope you are doing more than well. I hope you are happy and fulfilled, and I wish you all the blessings the universe can bestow upon you.

happy happy happy birthday!!!!!!! hope you are doing well wherever you are!! i know it's been a few years, pero i know everyone will agree with me when i say that the impact you left on our lives hasn't faded at all. we were very, very lucky to have you as our field director and to have the chance to learn from you how to be better anthropologists and people. even now, when faced with situations that can be a little trying, i keep remembering your voice reminding me to be mindful of the ~nuance~ hahaha.

currently, i've just come back from a month of excavating at the ille cave site in northern palawan. i also work for an organization that does public heritage and archaeology work, and i've been thinking of teaching high school this coming schoolyear. it's been a couple of years since grad and i'm still not 100% where i want to go or what i want to do in life (medyo even split po ngayon between anthro, archaeo, and........🔥fine arts🔥), pero whatever path i'll end up taking i know i'll be constantly reminded of the things you taught us about being mindful of who we are and what our impacts as researchers or advocates will be.

more than any job title, i want to strive towards the example you've shown us-- i want to become a researcher who is kind, reflexive, critical, and whose work points always towards the achievement of social justice and in service of the people. you have been a sort of mentor and guidepost as to the kind of anthropologist and person i want to be, and i'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn under you.

Eyes on graduating. What is the objective of your research? And everything falls from that. Find out about the chemical use of the youth. Pasukan n'yo pa rin. Saan kayo nagdadate? Ano iniinom n'yo? Beer, liquor, ecstasy? These are all chemicals. Recording is very important. Recording for your generation is about audio recording. I remember the days noong cartridge pa. Siguro sampu, kasi napakamahal, 60 minutes na tape, 90 minutes na tape. Can you imagine? The cassette. And then naimbento ang recorder na maliit.

You have interviewees that are afraid to be petrified. Pero nagsusulat ka pa rin. These yellow pad papers were very useful, pero very obvious na nagsusulat ka. Nakatingin ka pa rin, tapos sulat. It's good form, some people would refuse. In terms of ethical dilemma, should I have sneakily recorded him? Makukuha ang kanyang esensya. Kailangan ko rin galangin yun. In your mind, ijnihwgh, but you still need to respect that. This will have a higher purpose.
