What role does the motif play in the meaning of the work as a whole?

The motif, vision/blindness, plays a major role in the meaning of the work as a whole because it reveals the perspective views of each race and the extent to which the lack of sight affects individuals all round. Eyes either relay insight or deception therefore those who are blind limit the awareness of the world around them. Repeatedly blindness is experienced in the result of a greater oppressive force and manipulation. Hence, this motif contributes to the meaning because it brings to light racial tensions and the positions that blacks underwent in cause of no one seeing the world as it is.

Once the narrator reads the letter he has a backflash of all of the years he has lived. The narrator seems to feel as though he has been put into this embarrassing situation before (manipulated). This is significant because the narrator's point of view on the world seems to change after this experience. His eyes were now dry, meaning he was blinded by the truth.

As the blindfold goes on, it becomes clear that it was never taken off. This is significant because throughout the story the narrator is going through life blind. The blindfold keeps the narrator from the truth. He refuses to see and confront the truth. When he tries to fight back, the white man stops him. This is important in the story because people set many limitations to the narrator. The narrator is never noticed for who he is, but rather someone who can be easily manipulated.

The metaphor of one eye illuminates the fact that blacks live in a world of oppression in which they forcefully turn a blind eye to. This metaphor serves as a means to advocate for unity with in the black community and work together to fight and understand the social complexities that are present. Moreover, blacks can't immerse themselves in the world as their true selves thus causing them to present themselves with a revised identity. Through this the author brings to light the concept of double consciousness; the feeling of having more than one identity dependent on the environment.

With the mere addition of accessories to his outfit, the narrator is perceived as a completely different person. Even though it is starts off as simply being a means of protection from the men of Ras the Destroyer, the disguise liberates him, for the people of Harlem only recognize the clothing of the narrator, and see through him as a person. The idea of being invisible to the public is exhilarating for him because he has always tried to show who he is, or who he identifies as, and is always trying to prove himself, never, knowingly, pretending to be someone else. On the other hand, the fact that the people of Harlem see through the narrator goes to show the superficiality in the world, the deception of reality and how distorted their outlook is.
