Soda comes to Pony's defense but Darry screams at him too causing Pony to scream at him too and Darry slaps Pony as a result. This makes Pony run away with Johnny. Afterward, the doctors inform them that Dally would be okay after 3 days in the hospital, but that Johnny was in critical condition and in severe shock.

Ponyboy and Randy have a talk with each other and Randy is remorseful for his involvement in this gang activity and the death of Bob. He says he is not going to participate at the Rumble.
