One experience I share with the author is growing up in a low social class. My family is similar to the author's cause just like them we had ways of trying to make it without much. One thing I found out about a character is learning that the main character/Author/Narrator got severely burnt around their body as a child

The author's family struggle with poverty casts back a reflection of their lower social class. The constant movement of places to find somewhere to stay is a key point of the Walls family. The author's parents'poor ability to provide basic necessities, such as shelter and food show the dark reality of living in poverty. The family's situation only worsens with their lack of resources and education. As a result, the author's social class is a significant social issue that affects her life growing up and plays a role in setting the tone for the rest of her life.

One quote that stood out to me was when the author questions her safety "I wonder if the fire was out to get me. I wondered if all the fire was out to get me" (walls, 34). The author was referring to traumatic events in her life relating to fire when she begins to question this. Her first experience being at 3 years old when her dress caught on fire while she was boiling hot dogs and then when a trailer she and her family were sleeping in caught on fire. This quote was significant to me because she was so young when she was introduced to the dangers of the world and already questioning its uncertain safety and unpredictable challenges.

One recurring pattern of words in "The Glass Castle" is the dad constantly saying his full name "Rex Walls" to put himself on a higher pedestal than everyone else.
1. A big plot in the story so far is Jeannette and her family constantly moving around because they wont pay any bills or rent anywhere. This causes a problem of them never having a place to stay and constantly have to moce around
1. The author uses Ethos at the beginning of the story when she sees her mom at a park going through a trash bin later revealing she's homeless.

If a younger audience were to read this they wouldn't understand most of the author takes about like with the "Green Lantern", Billy's actions towards Jeannette, or the reason they have to keep moving. But if an older audience was reading this story they'd feel sad for what the family goes through or uncomfortable with the story development.
1. I'm a pretty big family person so reading about how close Jeannette is with her family and what they do for each other; always trying to protect and defend one another when in trouble.
  1. one of my personal experiences I have that can kind of relate with Jeannette is the living situations. When I was young my family would move from apartment to apartment until we eventually just started renting out a room in our apartment to have support with rent no matter how shitty the extra people were we did what we could to get by. So I can relate to Jeannette needing to move place to place so they have a roof over their head.

One issue I see for the family throughout the chunk we read was social class. Social Class has been a problem since the start of the story and still plays a strong role as the author shares more about their life. Jeannette discusses how their economic situation causes struggles for her family like when they finally got some money her dad completely burnt it on expenses. This is an example of Jeannette's family not knowing how to live consistently with money which also falls under the category of education because the two parents in the story refuse help from anyone else. Because they don't know how to properly spend money the author and her family have to constantly go through life barely scrapping by making which is a huge part of all the characters life in the story.

An experience I share with the author would be when Billy shows up to her house with a bb gun. Just like Jeannette there was a kid in my neighborhood that had bb guns an would irresponsibly use them (we were like 6-9 why would his parents even buy him that?).

I would say my family is different from the author's family because her family is very close while her siblings are still super young, meanwhile my siblings and I would fight a lot when we were younger. Another difference between families is her moms parenting tactics, my mom was very hands on with us and wouldn't let us to far out of her sight.

I can't think of anything other than the author's encounter with Billy

although their economic system doesn't have anything to support families like the authors, you ultimately can't blame it all on the system because their parents choose to not have jobs to support their own family.

a quote that stood out to me was what the tall black girl asks Jeannette while at the playground. "You think you better than us?" and "You think you as good as me?" (Walls, 139). The girl asks Jeannette this just a moment before she and her friends push her to the ground and start kicking Jeannette from all around. The reason behind her assault could be because of her being "a super smart kid" from Phoenix, Arizona coming to rundown city. This quote stood out to me because it's another example of how differences in social classes or back rounds can lead some people to have different opinions on others.

The author's writing about growing up poor focuses on the struggles that those with economic problems have to go through. The story presents how social class can collide with race, gender, and other characteristics continuing the difficulties with the author's family situation. The story evaluates the concept that dedication and hard work can help lift the struggle of poverty. Through the author's experiences, the reader can infer the shame and dishonor that comes with her financial situation and how it affects the views of someone.

Experiences I share with the author are growing up poor. I didn't grow up poor like Jeannette but I did grow up broke in a household of 4 with a single mother. Although I didn't grow to have an exact life as Jeanette I did have some similarities like having to move a lot because of rent being too much. Something I didn't experience like Jeannette was having buttons missing from her coat or only having 3 sets of clothes for the weeks

one quote that stood out to me was one from Jeanette while in her home with her family: "We can't go on living like this" (walls,187). Jeanette says this when she realizes just how bad her living conditions are. From needing to circle around a mini fire and needing to walk around their home in blankets, to not being able to use their bathroom anymore Jeanette realized if she wanted a difference in her family and help them she needed to be that difference.

A force that motivates some of the characters in the story are their social classes, like Jeannette and her family's lives being brought down by her fathers actions and in realization to this she decides for her mom that they should be separated from him to better their lives.
