Within our table groups, we were tasked with five minutes to think of different ways to shave a monkey, wild and reasonable. This task was conducted to practise our innovative and creative thinking to find as many ideas as possible. Our ideas included freezing the monkey and chipping its hair, using a razor, trimmer, radioactivity, waxing, ripping, chemotherapy, sheering, etc.

Picture Product was a task designed to think of multiple extraordinary ideas with a given situation. The picture can be depicted differently according to the side viewed. The two scenarios given were music and health workers, and tourism and students. The image can be understood as a robot, helping students with their work and understanding practical activity, or tourists with understanding the history behind each artefact. It can be even working as an automatic walker when tourists and students are tired, or as a portable electricity generator to recharge devices for both categories. It can be seen as a robot that plays music to increase the performance of health works, or a robot that detects people emotional state and plays music to lift their mood, helping health workers with mental health.

Initially, we drew thirty circles and were given 2 minutes to create objects out of these circles. We were meant to complete as many as possible at this time. This task helped me to think of many ideas in a short amount of time, although it was more basic than some other tasks we did, it helped develop the beginning stages of my enterprise and innovative thinking. These objects created can be seen in the image above.

Imagine a New Way was a task designed for groups of 3-4 to find an innovative way to do a task, thus the name, "Imagine a New Way [to...]". The task was to imagine a new way to protect your skin, thus the development of the idea Hollar, a Hoodie in your Collar, to keep U and V away from UV. This idea was fashionable, affordable, easy to access, protective, realistic and doesn't prevent any abilities in anything! The hoodie can roll out of your collars and connect at the top, and thus after use can be rolled back into your collars and connected there.

So far, in the lessons covered in Week 1, some major concepts covered would include creative and critical thinking and collaboration. These concepts were introduced with the task of 30 circles, How to Shave a Monkey task, Imagine a New Way, and Picture Product. Within 30 circles, we were restricted in time, which exercised our brain to think of a varied of items, objects and activity that were shaped in the form of a circle. This introduced the concepts of creative thinking. However, How to Shave a Monkey, Imagine a New Way and Picture Product, all included collaboration in groups of 2-4. Within a restricted time, we were tasked to create innovative ideas with strange pictures and ideas, which allowed us to think more "outside the box".

These tasks are helping to build a habit of thinking of more extraordinary ideas when approaching problems, which will help us in our summative assessments of Spin-Off Project and INNOV8.

However, I am extremely excited about the idea of designing a new innovation and presenting it in a spin-off "Shark Tank" format. I have always been fond of using my enterprise skills and hope to develop on them through this course.

According to the values survey, my top 3 values are Ambition, Commitment and Ethics. This is most likely caused by the recent goals I have set for myself with the constant determination to get better. In the future, I wish to value more compassion and meaningful work (which are some of the weaker values for me), so that I can make a difference in the world and in others' lives. I think my current values are important in the Action Project course, but it is the first step in the direction of developing my weaker values.

I believe the aspects in which there might be a slight disadvantage for me in Action Project, include, efficiency in collaboration when working with a distracted group of people. However, maintaining elements in one of the most important 5Cs (Collaboration), I am sure that as a group we would work towards the bigger goal for INNOV8 and in the Spin-Off Project. I believe this can be achieved through planned execution and setting checkpoints to ensure work is developing at a good pace to meet deadlines.

This was achieved through an interview consisting of questions such as, What specific jobs do they want (or need) to get done at the time?, What was their desired outcome, what did they hope would happen?, etc. The answered helped me narrow down to a singular problem.

A key aspect in attempting to solve another person's issues is by understanding their perspective, or in other words, being empathetic. Thus, the following activity was an Empathy Map, in which we try to understand what they think/feel/say, understand what they need, what influences them, what they do in this instance, their constraints, pains and gains. This practised our ability in this which is needed for practical use in our INNOV8 assessments.

Where did our group do really well in the Spinoff task?

Our group did exceptional in creativity, communication, collaboration, time management, problem solving, innovative thinking and intentional usage of persuasive skills, blending logical arguments with emotional appeal to make a compelling and impactful presentation. My group was able to identify a real problem with our society and come up with a cost efficient solution that could be implemented into our current day system without the expense of anything in particular.

What improvements would we make if we had the opportunity to do the task again?

The only improvement that our group needed was some minor adjustment with the volume of the music. Everything else was done to an exceptional level with entertainment, persuasion, ideas and solutions. Something that also could have been improved was the skit, but this was not possible due to time constraints, the skit could have demonstrated further consequences of traffic congestions, such as noise pollution, restlessness, economic loss, and more.

What Elements of Collaboration were successful?

The most successful elements of collaboration were engaging in partnerships, committing to a purpose and outcome greater than individual parts. As we had much less time to create our pitch, we decided that assigning roles will be much less effective than putting our heads together and thinking of ideas while recording our script. This allowed for a smooth transitioning, back and forth pitch with not just chunks being said by a single person. Although, all elements were successful, such as, being inclusive, respective, engaging in conversation and taking responsibility on supporting others, these ones were most impactful for our final product. I personally loved the effect of being successful in 'outcome greater than individual parts' as it is not what I traditionally attempt. Thinking of ideas and creative strategies together through conversations were just much more effective than writing our own ideas for our own parts on a Google Document. Some observable behaviours included, pursues steps to improve, excel in or gain

expertise in relation to the finding the most suitable solution and best way to present the solution to the specific target audience, while utilising the persuasive techniques.

What improvements could have been made in terms of collaboration?

Our weakest element may have been taking responsibility on supporting others. This is because our group only consisted of 2 member, and most/all the work that was completed was done together, excluding the editing and voice over that I completed at home. Receiving constructive feedback would have been a big step up, especially receiving from the target audience.

What Persuasive Techniques did we use? How effective were these? What evidence do I have of this? (Repeated)

Logos was used in our introduction through the implementation of statistics, data and credibility. Not only were statistics used, but specific data that focussed on the citizens of Australia - Adelaide and the citizens of Burnside. This was done by addressing the data that was given by students of Glenunga International High School, who were familiar with the traffic congestion of Portrush Road, Burnside, especially during peak hours. For example, when Fonty and I were recording, "...338 serious injury crashes in 2022’

Shaun: ‘and 523 fatal crashes in 2021’

Fonty: ‘Put yourself in the shoes of the people that have been in these fatal crashes’

Shaun: ‘Imagine being in the financial, mental and physical situation as these people!’...."

putting the audience in a place to think about the situations of these people allow for emotional connection, which links with pathos. Logos is used with the statistical facts.

I directly addressed the audience, linking to their responses and data, but I also utilised my body language by pointing towards the audience while addressing their issues and data.

The main persuasive technique we used in the body was - Pathos.

We began the body with logical reasoning along with data from credible sources, which links to the persuasive technique of ethos and logos.

The skit utilised the technique of Pathos, with humour utilised to create an emotional connection with the audience, and allowing them to visualise the struggles of parents and students due to early starts and traffic congestions.

Some issues we depicted from these suburbs included:

Campbelltown -
- Local basketball ring is short, and , damaged so it is insufficient
- No local malls
- Hill-ish, making for uneven houses
- Litter

Burnside:
- Traffic congestion
- Rent is very expensive
- Noisy main roads
- Narrow streets
- Hilly, making for uneven houses and etc
- Litter

Other aspects in this factor that have influence is authority and characteristics of the speakers. This can be done by stating reputable sources, our tone we use, and our personal experiences in tandem with experiences of affected people.

Pathos -

Pathos is about emotionally connecting with the audience. Facts, evidence, logical and structured reasoning are best ways to implement the persuasive tool of Logos in our pitch. This was enforced by implementing the issues with students being late and tired, parents being tired, labour force being late... etc.

The middle section was going to be more fun and engaging, we were planning to enforce the persuasive technique of logos, with logical arguments, benefits and facts, as well as introducing our data that WE collected from our class, that supported our facts to a personal level. We were also going to use the persuasive tool of pathos to create a skit of humour to engage the audience to connect with our pitch.

Finally, we urged the audience to support our cause, that had support systems, benefits with minimal expense.

The persuasive technique we used in the introduction was - Logos.

Thus, the final section of our pitch was recorded at home using images and voice overs. However, an issue that wasn't noticed until after submission was music. Although the script is audible with the music, to amplify the meaning of our pitch, changing the music volume ever so slightly would've made a tiny improvement to our pitch. However, the music was crucial in making the pitch engaging and enlightening the mood of the audience.

Thus began our research and we developed upon different aspects of the script.

Things we focussed included:

Biogas mechanical energy production

Councils provide a purple to each household “Biogas Bin” for food waste only.

Things to consider

Council Funding

Cost of Truck Trips & Frequency

Percentage of Tax

Machine Facility(Location)

Average food waste per household

Energy efficiency

Incentives

Conversion of Energy

Energy Output method

Safety requirements

Cost of production

Partners/Sponsors

Problem

Product/Service

Resources Required

Who is it impacting?

Citizens of Australia

Key statistics

The ACCC’s latest electricity report shows that median effective prices for residential customers across all regions grew by 14 per cent between September 2022 and September 2023.

From September 2022 to September 2023, there was an 18 per cent increase in the number of consumers applying for financial hardship support from their electricity retailer.

Why is it important and worth solving?

Although South Australians are now beginning to slowly recover from the rapid increase, there is no guarantee that this may not reoccur.

From these questions, we developed our script, after allocating each part to each member of Fonty, Aaron and Myself. From here, this script was written:Hook - SELL YOUR PROBLEM!:

Shaun: 2023 - A middle-class family in South Australia

Aaron sitting in a chair, he flicks through the mail to find his energy bills, with a shocked face he drops the bills:

Fonty walks in and sits on the floor next to him picking up the fallen bills, and asks him concerned: Papa why are you stressed?

Aaron covers his face with his hands (indicating high stress levels): The electricity bill.. It’s just too high.. I don’t think we will be able to afford your Christmas present.

Fonty looks down in disappointment and picks up a business card that reads: Plant Circuit? Money that grows from trees.. Papa looks Fonty hands him the card

Aaron dials the number on his phone

Shaun walks in from behind the screen and Aaron drops his phone in surprise (a little bit of humour):

I am like one of you, living in South Australia midst a cost of living crisis with origin from energy rise. I am Shaun Tojo, PhD, with studies and research in gasification, biogas, waste-to-gas and pyrolysis.

Fonty stands up: This single parent is not the only one suffering from this.. as Australian Competition and Consumer Commission electricity report shows that average prices for residential customers across Australia grew by 14 percent between September 2022 and September 2023.

Aaron: And was it not until 2024 did we all begin to recover, because the data shows from September 2022 to September 2023, there was an 18 percent increase in the number of consumers applying for financial hardship support from their electricity retailer.

Shaun: Although South Australians are now beginning to slowly recover from the rapid increase, there is no guarantee that this may not reoccur. So it is IMPERATIVE that you have a safety net.

Fonty: You might be wondering, well what is the solution? How can we save ourselves from the constant unexpected cycle of inflation?

Aaron: Well, it’s not like sustainable energy is a new thing.. We have expensive solar panels.. Wind turbine farms that don’t directly help us but do to big industries…

Shaun: In 2016-2017, half a percent of the national electricity generation was from biogas, however, Australia’s potential electricity generation from biogas accounts for almost 9 per cent of Australia’s total energy consumption of 4,247 PJ in 2016-2017!

Fonty: That’s about 90,000 biogas units! Biogas can be broken down from organic waste, crop waste and even manure! But once again, how does this help the residents of Australia?

Aaron: Plant Circuit, our delivery system to convert YOUR WASTE into YOUR ENERGY! Every household produces food waste. Rather than composting it or even worse disposing it off to landfill, we’re turning it into something valuable – biogas. This can be converted into electricity using a combustion engine, fuel cell, or gas turbine. Customers buy our bins coloured purple at a set price from our company, these bins are then delivered to the customers, in which they store their organic, and food waste.

Shaun: Once every fortnight the bins are collected and transferred to a bio gas processing facility. Then their food waste is weighed and according to the average conversion efficiency percentage the amount of biogas produced is calculated. Waste is converted to biogas through anaerobic digestion which is the process by which microorganisms decompose organic materials without oxygen, including food waste, wastewater biosolids, and animal manure. In the process of anaerobic digestion, microorganisms break down organic materials without oxygen, including food waste, wastewater biosolids, and animal manure.

Fonty: This amount of biogas calculated is stored in a battery that is attached to their house, customers pay for this battery with a variety of versions available to choose from. Customers will be able to use the biogas electricity for free until it has run out and then after there is no biogas available they will use normal electricity that they pay for. This reduces the amount of priced power used, thus keeping the money in your wallet.

Aaron: The cost of biogas plants is determined by land prices, the model of the biogas plant, size and dimensioning of the biogas unit, amount and prices of material, labour, and the lifespan and future uses for the plant. To gain a rough idea of the cost of a simple, unheated biogas plant, for every cubic metre of gas capacity, it costs 75-115 Australian dollars. This cost accounts for the installation and the labour required. We’ll have trucks collect the bins on a fortnightly basis and the waste will be sent to a biogas facility, so it can be sent back to the consumer. As for the revenue, we intend to partner with the South Australian government and make our business a government initiative so that we have a people first, profit-second business mindset and we can make a real difference in the community.

Fonty: You may be wondering how are we different from other companies? Well it’s because we put YOU first. Our specialised purple bins are always there for you to turn YOUR food waste into clean and sustainable biogas providing a multitude of benefits to the household. Unlike others in the business, we eradicate the hassle and rather than you coming to us, we are at your door to guarantee that every gram of waste is converted into priceless energy for YOU. We also adjust to your needs by offering multiple container options to store your beloved biogas. Our service is easy, efficient and focused on YOU and YOUR SAVINGS!

Shaun: Our service does partner up with other companies in the industry and this is the biogas facilities in the area, such as: REMONDIS Australia, SA Water’s Glenelg Wastewater Treatment Plant as well as other interstate facilities. Part of our future goals is to extend and solidify contracts with these companies as well as become a government initiative for easier funding.

Aaron: Our service is for cost conscious families who want to stop throwing away money because of their ridiculous electricity balls. If you truly feel like your household's electricity bills are too high, our service is what you have been needing this whole time. Want to make a difference in the environment? Well our solution is perfect for that as well as we not only focus on reducing your bills we also want to make a positive change in the environment by producing eco-friendly energy through organic food waste.

Fonty pointing at Shaun : Wait, how did you get into our house?

Shaun: Plant Circuit, Money that comes from trees

This script is effective because it combines relatability, emotional depth, and direct engagement with the audience. Set in a South Australian household, it addresses rising electricity costs, creating an emotional connection through Aaron’s financial struggles and Fonty’s disappointment. My role as the expert not only offers a practical solution with “Plant Circuit” but also builds trust by presenting myself as someone who understands their struggles, fostering a personal connection with the audience.

The use of data, such as the ACCC electricity report and biogas statistics, enhances credibility while appealing to logical and environmental concerns. The conversational dialogue avoids technical jargon and includes humor, keeping the tone approachable and relatable. By speaking directly to the audience with “YOU” and presenting myself as one of them, the script engages on a personal level, making the solution feel tailored to their needs.

Distinctive features like specialized purple bins, doorstep service, and partnerships emphasize a customer-first approach. The tagline, “Plant Circuit, Money that comes from trees,” reinforces the message of sustainability and savings. Overall, the script effectively combines personal engagement, practical solutions, and compelling messaging.

With our final pitch, we received positive feedback with our hook, of a play consisting of a struggling father and son, who is affected the cost of living crisis that challenged residents of Australia

Using feedback from the final expo, such as making it clear who the energy and electricity goes to.. how customers gain their energy.. benefits and costs.. we made a clear and concise 1 - 2 minute pitch. From here we understood there were 3 factors we needed to split into.. Design, Posters and Final Pitch. I worked on the final pitch while fonty worked on the table design and aaron with the posters. This covered the span of 2-3 lessons and on the day, due to some absences, we needed to print some extra images to stand out in comparison to others. Thankfully, my 1-2minute script was well enough for my group to get top 3.. and from their I showcased my presentation and 5 minute script to attain the first prize award. This was a successful experience and if I were to do anything differently was interactive games for the audience and lights for the table.

Final Reflection

Out of this course, the most beneficial competencies I learned was speaking and presenting. Not only I was very confidently willing to talk to the 30+ students but at a loud and clear level. Thus, my knowledge of both problem solving and design thinking was a work in progress as my group and I have jumped through numerous obstacles, such as absent members, time issues, and creating a well-executed expo accompanied with a finale pitch. I was able to effectively problem solve when my team requested assistance, or could not complete a task to their full potential, my input was valuable and we were able to create our final product.

For the Action Project, the concepts of 5Cs – communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and citizenship were applied. To design a biogas solution, we had to actively communicate our concept as well as coalesce feedback into enhancements. Communication was enhanced because the group broke down many duties to ensure every member could work according to specializations including scriptwriting, table construction as well as poster creation. Some examples included the creative solution element such as Plant Circuit (biogas bins) and use of interactions. On the same note, critical thinking was very much important when reviewing the research, defining issues and even focusing on real world issues such as the costs of the project and energy requirements. Last but not the least citizenship emerged by creating a product which is helpful for the welfare of environment and the exchequer.

By applying Action Project into the real life, one is able to to deal with future problem solving and team work issues. These skills will sharpen oral and written presentation skills especially in advocating for change, and group work fosters appropriate cooperation in projects to be undertaken in the future. Innovation applies creativity relevant in the development of integrated strategies cutting across disciplines while critical thinking enhances decision making and research. These skills will serve both academic and career goals where flexibility and organizational skill are needed, and an ability to lead.
