The conflict in the story The Last Leaves Falling by, Sara Benwell is internal conflict. In the story Abe is fighting with himself about whether or not he wants to live and where he's going to go when he dies. In the beginning of the story Abe is fighting with himself about whether or not what he said to his friends is right or wrong and he keeps questioning if his friends really like him or not. Towards the end of the story Abe was also fighting with himself on whether or not he wanted to live, and what was easier for him and his friends. Abe eventually came to peace with himself before he died and was finally happy with himself and his life because his goal of dying in peace had been fulfilled.

Dynamic Character

In the story Abe was a dynamic character. In the beginning of the story Abe was very antisocial and didn't want to make friends or leave his house. You first start to notice changes in Abe when he asks his mother if they can go to the Festival of Ages, which I figured out is a giant parade and celebration by using context clues. This event in the story sort of hinted that Abe might start to make friends and go out in public more. Towards the middle of the story Abe signs up for this online chat website and starts to make more friends online. He really starts to change when he meets his friends in person. At the end of the story Abe has two best friends that he's constantly with and they always go places. So in a way Abe went from being very introverted to being somewhat of an extrovert.

Setting

The author made the setting of this story in Japan. In the story, it talked about how there was a lot of Asian culture. Based on the context clues such as the language they spoke and what they ate it took place in Asia. Later in the story Abe started to use a local website to chat with people online. I think that this was a big hint that the author gave to where the story took place. I didn't catch it right away but once I had been reading the online chats for awhile I realized that the website was called KyoToTeenz, which spells out Tokyo Teens. Another way that you might be able to tell that it takes place in Asia is the names. Mai and Kaito are both Asian names.

Static Character

In the story the author made some of the secondary characters static characters. I would consider Kaito and Mai static characters because they don't change during the story. In the middle of the story when Kaito and Mai are introduced in the story they know nothing about Abe. As the story goes on and they start to learn more about Abe they still treat him the same way they did before they knew he had a disability. At the very end of the story when the story is talking about how Abe is killing himself it doesn't really say the opinions of Mai and Kaito. Throughout the story they are supportive and since the author didn't write anything about their opinions at the end I'm assuming that their opinions were still the same and they didn't change.

Theme

One of the many themes for this story could be "live everyday to the fullest". Towards the end of the story the author is having Abe try something new with his friends or do something that he might not have normally done. In the beginning of the story Abe is getting depressed about his disease and doesn't do anything except read in his room and search things on his computer. The author is subtly saying that this is having a negative affect on Abe. The author is showing that things got better once Abe started to realize that he should try new things and have fun. He didn't have much time left when the author talked about how Abe didn't get so worried about things because he realized that maybe it won't be so bad. These are a few of the reasons why the theme could be "Live everyday to the fullest.

In the exposition of the story we learn a lot about Abe and what he's like. We also learn the general area of where the story takes place. I think that in the first few chapters the author was trying to get the reader to really know the characters personalities by sharing background knowledge about them. The author shares about Abe's family and what they like to do. The author also does a very good job of showing their emotions and opinions about Abe. I think that the author did a good job with introducing the characters and setting in the exposition.
