Q: How can we encourage students to express their feelings to their teachers?

A: One on one talk opportunities are essential to sharing feelings. Often, students feel self conscious in a large group of peers for judgements sake and may act differently in that setting. As an educator, you need to be approachable and build trust with the students, let them know what times you are free to be approached with concerns, and genuinely listen to them and take action with the information they give you.

By talking to our students and empathizing with them we build better connections so that when they do have a problem they will come to us and talk instead of lashing out.

The steps I might take to incorporate restorative practices in my future classroom is establishing relationships and respect with my students. Creating a comfortable and fun learning environment is really important. When students feel comfortable and safe, they have somewhere they can learn and feel comfortable while doing it.

We could have share-outs and everyone has to share how they are feeling, even if it is just one word, and we could have one-on-one conversations and just listen to the students, so that they don't feel pressured into things.

By hearing others out we can build the trust within one another to just always feel welcomed to express feelings. Also making sure we aren't belittling others.

The first aspect of this is demonstrating to students that the classroom is a safe place for them to learn and be themselves. And in order for this to be a safe place we need to respect one another.

Having students work together to problem solve allows for more perspectives and awareness of how our actions affect others. If we are willing to be honest and show our students how to talk about what they are feeling, we can create an environment where problems can be solved easily and without more conflict.

Once or twice a day we can have 5 to 10 minutes of journaling time. Maybe once in the morning and once at the end of the day. The teacher will be the only person who reads it. This will be an opportunity for students to talk about their feelings in a way that feels accessible to them. Writing also really helps people develop their ideas around how they feel. This will be a good start to building trust, and hopefully this will encourage students to be open with their teacher about their emotions.
