In July of 2016, the US Army Corps and Engineers approved a $3.7 billion construction of a oil pipeline. This pipe would span over 4 four US states covering 1,172 miles. But, theirs one big problem, this pipeline may take some land from one Indian reservation called the " Standing Rock Reservation", and lets just say their not happy about it. The Indians of this reservation have took this to the supreme court, and with the permission of President Trump the energy group called ETP have been granted the right to proceed with the pipeline function.

This oil pipe would carry newly found crude oil from deep in the ground to refineries, and potentially change the US oil supply. The pipe line would cross over 4 states, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. Located on the border of the Dakota's is a Indian reservation called the " Standing rock reservation". The people of this reservation believe the pipe line in on their reservation, therefore they are protesting, along with other tribes that have joined. Farmers are also taking this action to court to keep the pipe off their property.

Building this pipe will affect animals, will definitely impact the oil production in a positive way, may impact the environment and wont just impact the Indians but will impact everyone in America. This pipe could endanger animal habitats while being built through the US environment, and this pipe could also cause an oil spill if maintenance is not kept up to date. This pipe will allow around 830,000 barrels of oil to be brought from the ground a day! This has a major positive impact on the oil companies and people exporting it. As you extract oil from the ground greenhouse gases are being released, and adding another oil pipeline will just be adding more pollution into the environment. Finally, this will impact the people of America on a more broad spectrum. Allowing more oil to be bought and sold is allowing the peoples mind set to think that oil is always going to be plentiful, when in all reality, is a nonrenewable resource, and should be steering away from using so much oil.

Trump VS Obama

During Ex president Obama's term, he had declined both the Dakota and the Keystone XL pipelines. He did this because fear of climate change and global warming. Within the first few days of current president Trump's open day in election, Trump had decided to throw away all Obama's ideas on both pipelines, and also many other ideas. When asked about about why he did this and about his concern on global warming and climate change, Trump advised people that global warming was just a "Hoax perpetrated by China". Having two different viewpoints on such large and controversial topics is very hard, and especially when you have the power which the president has. Going against what someone else had already addressed shows that Trump didn't care about previous acknowledgement and or what the Indian tribe thought.

The biggest group that is protesting that an outsider sees is obsessively the Indians from the " Standing Rock Reservation". These people have been on every news broadcast and news article at some point. What there biggest concern is, is the pipe going right through their sacred land. In 1851 the treaty of Fort Laramie was signed by the US government acknowledging a certain part of land that would be sectioned off for different Indian tribes. Also this pipeline is said be go right through prayer grounds and burial grounds. This sparked the protesting movement that has been going on since 2016. This pipeline is also running right through farmers land, which cause many farmers to get involved in the protest and taking this matter to court.

Over 560,000 people have signed an online petition to keep this pipeline from operating.

My Thoughts

I have never heard about this topic prior being required to do a project on it, therefore having zero knowledge. This on-going battle has been occurring since April of 2016 and a year later the operation had started, and yet in 2018 the protesting is still going. This pipeline would change the way America buys and sells oil, bringing in millions of dollars for local and federal governments. This project would help citizens not only by creating thousands of jobs, but excelling local governments to improve on road conditions and also a much needed face lift of certain cities. But this major pipe interferes with hundreds on people not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. Once this issue made it to a national scale, the federal government and energy group should have found another route for this pipe. I don't have any specific ideas on what they should have did, all i know it that it impacts lives, living and dead. This not only goes against the Treaty signed on 1851, but the battles of passed Indian ancestors fought to keep a certain piece of land to call home, that we as a passed government took away from them. Not only do i think we shouldn't have went through an Indian reservation, but this new founded oil does not help American citizens prepare for a future with oil and gas. I think we as a country should be heading in a direction where oil is used less and more electric products prices are reduced so more citizens can have the ability to use this new technology. This is not only better for the environment, but can save your pockets money.
