GAMIFICATION

I learned that gamification means applying game elements such as points, badges, leaderboards, and challenges in non-game contexts like education. In language learning, gamification can make lessons more engaging and motivate students by turning tasks into fun, goal-oriented activities. Apps like Duolingo, Kahoot!, and Quizizz use gamification to encourage consistent practice, provide immediate feedback, and foster healthy competition.

https://youtu.be/mOssYTimQwM?si=ISqDCexz6_rDJz_T ( The power of gamification in Education by Scott Hebert)

I have used Duolingo before. I enjoyed the gamification features of the app. In the class, I have also participated in on Kahoot, and I noticed that everyone was more excited and attentive because of the competitive element. After this topic, I understand that those activities weren’t just “games,” but carefully designed strategies to increase motivation and learning.

Games are always enjoyable. Games will help us physically or mentally if we use them properly. It would be better if we learn our lesson through gamification, not just knowing about gamification.

1) What did I learn on this topic?
I learned that social media can be a powerful tool for English Language Teaching (ELT) if used carefully and purposefully. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram allow teachers and learners to share resources, practice authentic communication, and build learning communities.

https://youtu.be/CxCsk-rvfTQ?si=QU0O-kHh6nXZ9cpJ ( Social media is not bad, you are just using it wrong by Eva Amin)

2) How does this connect with what I already know or have experienced?

I used social media, and sometimes I learned vocabulary from photo cards. Small video clips also motivate me to learn languages. After this topic, I understood that even casual use of social media can become meaningful learning if I approach it with purpose.

c) What could have been done differently to teach this topic?

An icebreaker activity could have been included. We could have shared our experience using social media to learn the English Language. If you came out of the desk, the class would be more engaging.

1) What did I learn on this topic?
I understood that digital citizenship is about using technology in a responsible, safe, and respectful way. It includes understanding online rights and responsibilities, protecting privacy, respecting others’ opinions, and avoiding harmful behaviors like cyberbullying or plagiarism. I realized that digital citizenship is as important as real-world citizenship because our online actions also have consequences.

https://www.edutopia.org/blog/digital-citizenship-need-to-know-vicki-davis

https://youtu.be/Uww2XHnijKw?si=m_hRm3H6tgpoWi4e( The heart of Digital Citizenship by Anne Collier)

2) How does this connect with what I already know or have experienced?
I already knew the importance of keeping my passwords safe and being polite online.
Using Concordances and Corpora

1) What did I learn on this topic?

I comprehend that concordances and corpora are powerful tools for studying language patterns. A corpus is a large, structured collection of texts, and a concordance shows every occurrence of a word or phrase in context. These tools help learners and teachers analyze authentic language use, understand collocations, idiomatic expressions, grammar patterns, and frequency of words.

2) How does this connect with what I already know or have experienced?
I have sometimes noticed patterns in English through reading, such as certain words often appearing together, but I never systematically analyzed them. Using concordances now seems like a more precise way to explore these patterns.

3) What could have been done differently to teach this topic?

If we did some classwork, it would be better for using and understanding. Same pattern, no innovation has been done for a better understanding.

Theories Regarding Technology-Enhanced Language Learning

Several theories support the use of technology in language learning. Constructivist Theory emphasizes that learners build knowledge actively through interaction, which aligns with using online forums and collaborative tools. Sociocultural Theory highlights the role of social interaction and scaffolding, which connects to using video calls or chat apps for real communication practice.

I thought technology was just a tool to make learning easier, like using apps for vocabulary or grammar exercises. After learning these theories, I can see that the way technology is integrated matters. When I used Duolingo, I was following behaviorist principles, and when I joined an online speaking club, I was actually experiencing sociocultural learning by interacting with peers.

We had experienced these theories. Asking individuals was good. If your voice became louder and a little bit faster, then it would have been better.

1) What did I learn on this topic?
I came to know that online learning allows education to take place through digital platforms, using tools like Zoom and Google Classroom. It offers flexibility, accessibility, and a wide range of multimedia resources, which can make learning more engaging. However, it also comes with challenges such as lack of face-to-face interaction, technical issues, and difficulties in maintaining student motivation and concentration.

b) How does this connect with what I already know or have experienced?
During the pandemic, I had most of my classes online. At first, I enjoyed the flexibility of learning from home, but I often faced internet problems and distractions. Sometimes I felt less connected to teachers and classmates. This topic helped me see that my experiences were common and that online learning requires both teachers and students to adapt with new strategies for communication, time management, and engagement.

3) What could have been done differently to teach this topic?

There would have been steps to reduce monotony. Teachers should try to make energetic students.

Blended Learning

1) What did I learn on this topic?
I learned that blended learning combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online learning activities to create a more flexible and engaging learning environment. It allows students to learn at their own pace through digital resources while still benefiting from teacher guidance and classroom interaction. I also discovered that blended learning can increase motivation, promote learner autonomy, and provide access to a variety of multimedia resources that support different learning styles.

https://youtu.be/Mb2d8E1dZjY?si=O_re5xqV2tzYecRj(Click here-- blended learning and the future of education: Monique Markoff at TEDxIthacaCollege)

2) How does this connect with what I already know or have experienced?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced online classes through Zoom and Google Classroom. Later, when face-to-face classes resumed, some teachers continued to share online resources alongside classroom teaching. That was my first experience of blended learning, although I didn’t know the term at the time. This topic helped me understand that the combination of classroom and online learning was not just a temporary arrangement but an effective long-term teaching method.

3) What could have been done differently to teach this topic?

I think a game could be included to teach the topic. A short drama might be good for better engagement and understanding.
