This upset the colonists and rose tensions. The Sons of Liberty would rise from this event with the famous slogan, "No taxation without representation" The British wanted and needed those extra taxes after they amassed a large debt after the French and Indian War. In the modern age, taxes are also a very heated debate. Many people want to lower the taxes, as they believe that the tax rate is too high and unfair, similar to colonial America. However other people want the tax rate to be higher. They believe that higher taxes will ultimately better help their country and their civilians, such as providing healthcare and free tuition. This is an exact issue in the current United States. A famous slogan nowadays is "Tax the rich," made by people who believe the rich aren't fairly taxed. Eventually, the guards began to fire into the crowd. 5 casualties were the result of this event. Paul Revere turned this moment into propaganda, portraying the British as cold-blooded murderers. This further rose tensions among the colonists and made them angry. The British were also unhappy with the etching as it portrayed them very negatively. Nowadays propaganda is also used to paint people in a negative or positive light. For example, the civilians of North Korea are exposed to a multitude of anti-western propaganda. This is used to make North Korea seem like a better place. In political campaigns, propaganda is used against the opposing party in order to make them lose votes and gain more for themselves. The contents of it were made by Thomas Jefferson. They explained the actions of the colonies and declared their independence from Britain. This document used ideas from John Lock and other enlightenment philosophers. The colonists were empowered by this. The British as they began to lose their colonies, were angered over this. The Natives had a negative reaction to the declaration because it also pushed to further oppress them. It depicted them very racistly as "Merciless Indian Savages" In today's day and age, racism against the Native American community is still prevalent. Many of these stereotypical ideas are still around and negatively affect the Natives.
