Factor: Entrepreneurship
John Zimmer's friend Logan put out on Facebook that he was going to be starting a carpool service. He found that public service wasn't really optimal because what we pay for a bus ride could be $3 but it really costs the government $10. This is why he wanted to create a carpool service and he named it Zimride because he went to Zimbabwe and saw that they would give each other rides off pure curtesy. John saw this and had a meeting with logan in New York and they both really liked the idea so they started working on Zimride.

People called him crazy for leaving a concrete income and go try to start up a carpooling service. 2 months after John left Lehman Brothers it went bankrupt.

They did this just because they are trying to see if people liked this service. They knew that they would have to change this in the future.

Factor: capital
The capital is the new app Lyft. They sold Zimride to enterprise rent a car after working on it for about 5 years. They did this because the first three weeks of their new project that they did with Lyft was really working out. It was very successful with little focus so they decided to put all their focus into Lyft. The main reason why Lyft was doing better than Zimride was because Lyft there was people working where driving you somewhere was there job but Zimride was where people who where already going somewhere would give other people rides there.

2013: Hardships with law

The government was telling them to stop operating. After doing their research on the laws they asked for a meeting with the public utilities commission. they asked what the problem was and they said it was the safety. Lyft operated a way to tell them that they could insure safety. This was stressful for John because there was a chance of being sued. This was stressful because they just sold off Zimride. It took at least a year for them to overcome the government regulations and a couple more years in other cities other than San Fransisco.

Factor: Land
The resources are the cars being driven and the cities that are being driven in. John wants the future of Lyft to be where there isn't as many car owners in the cities. He wants Lyft to have this miles plan where Lyft lets you ride a certain miles based on what you payed for. They think that in the future that some of the cars in the future will be driven by the car itself. Their goal is to not want as many cars, roads, and parking lots in the cities.
