The book The Year We Disappeared has many aspects of hardship, loss, and fighting to continue on in life. An important theme that was represented throughout the novel was, that even in the darkest of times there is always a glimmer of hope. There is a song that I continued to think of while reading this novel, "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)," by Gary Allan. These are the lyrics to this song: I saw you standing in the middle of the thunder and lightning
I know you're feeling like you just can't win, but you're trying
It's hard to keep on keepin' on, when you're being pushed around
Don't even know which way is up, you just keep spinning down, 'round, down

Every storm runs, runs out of rain
Just like every dark night turns into day
Every heartache will fade away
Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain

So hold your head up and tell yourself that there's something more
And walk out that door
Go find a new rose, don't be afraid of the thorns
'Cause we all have thorns
Just put your feet up to the edge, put your face in the wind
And when you fall back down, keep on rememberin'

Every storm runs, runs out of rain
Just like every dark night turns into day
Every heartache will fade away
Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain

It's gonna run out of pain
It's gonna run out of sting
It's gonna leave you alone
It's gonna set you free
Set you free

Every storm runs, runs out of rain
Just like every dark night turns into day
Every heartache will fade away
Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain

It's gonna set you free,
It's gonna run out of pain,
It's gonna set you free

The Year We Disappeared, discusses how a innocent police officer was seriously injured while on the work force and while doing his everyday job. It also shows how this can impact a family and a town. Throughout the novel it continues to stress the fact that no matter how normal something can seem, it can change in an instant.
The article, Baton Rouge Shooting Jolts a Nation on Edge, like The Year We Disappeared, talks about how innocent people were brought down because of one mans actions. It also talks about how this one action affected the city of Baton Rouge as well as the entire nation. Both should be taken as lessons that we shouldn't act out on those who are innocent because of out feelings towards a certain subject that just happens to include those people.
Here is the link to the article Baton Rouge Shooting Jolts a Nation on Edge.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/18/us/baton-rouge-shooting.html?_r=0

Character Development

One of the main characters in The Year We Disappeared , John, was injured very badly and almost killed. Even when he was in the hospital fighting for his life, all that he was thinking about was getting revenge on the person who had done this to him. Throughout the book John has to continue to ask himself what is more important, protecting his family, or getting revenge on the person who did this to him, who hasn't even been proven guilty. In the first half of the book all that he can think about is how badly he wants the person who did this to him to suffer. Towards the end of the book he comes around to only wanting what his best for his family and is relying more on the police to do their jobs.

After reading this book and seeing that it is a fiction novel, I do believe that this character development is realistic. Many people in real life start with wanting revenge on everyone that has anything to do with what happened to them, and then come to their senses and start wanting to help those that they love instead of taking out their anger on them. When people first have a traumatic accident their initial reaction seems to be to want to hurt the person that did it to them. But, after a while that person comes around to not only wanting to be at peace with the situation but wanting to actually help the situation. This is why I think that this character development is realistic.
