"Bigger turned and saw a white girl walk into the room. She was very slender"(pg.51). By Bigger's assessment of her body upon first glance shows a hint of interest.
"She was making me lose my job! he thought. Goddamn! He knew nothing about Unions except that they were considered bad" (pg.52). Mary is an interesting character to Bigger. He finds her attractive none the less, but her views concerned him and his job security.

Mary deceives him, leading to her being taken to Jan.

"' I'm not going to the University," she said at last... She was an odd girl. all right. He felt something in her over and above the fear she inspired in him. She responded to him as if he were human, as if he lived in the same world as she"(pg. 64,65). Bigger starts to see that Mary likes being involved in with Black people. He realizes that she doesn't necessarily see them as inferior. This adds to his attraction to her deeper than her looks.

"There was white people to either side of him; he was sitting between two vast white looming walls" (pg. 67-8). Bigger is sitting between Jan and Mary which makes him feel uncomfortable since he sees them as different and weird for them being white and treating him as a human being.

"'Bigger' she said, 'you don't have to come in unless you really want to. Please, don't think... Oh, Bigger... We're not trying to make you feel badly...'" (pg. 72). Mary and Jan want to go to a restaurant that is associated to black people because they want to experience it, Bigger thinks it a plot towards him because it doesn't make sense that white people want to experience his life. Him being distant because of his personal feelings causes Mary to cry

"Now and then he watched Jan kiss Mary in the reflection of the rear mirror above his head" (pg. 75)... "I'm almost drunk, he thought" (pg. 78). Bigger had drove around in the park for Jan and Mary, while in the back in they were kissing and Bigger watched, while doing so they were drinking and Mary was drunk which was very noticeable.

"she was dead; she was white; she was a woman; he had killed her; he was black; he might be caught; he did not want to be caught; if he were they would kill him." Bigger realizes his actions and the consequences that follow it. He killed someone and not only this he killed a white lady. The aftermath will be greater because of this. Illuminating Bigger's violent nature, without him even realizing it.

Mary and Bigger Kiss

"The thought and conviction that Jan had had her a lot flashed through his mind. He kissed her again... Something urged him to leave at once, but he leaned over her- not wanting to take his hands from her breasts"(pg.84-85). Mary initiated the kiss the two, and Bigger was more entranced than he knew. He genuinely enjoyed the kiss wanting to take it further, but the small inkling of fear, foreshadowing the demise that would come from the overpowering effects of his fear.

I think Mary's fate was a product of free will. From their first interaction, Bigger was obviously showing signs or attraction. His later actions gave him the push that pushed them together leading to their kiss, and to him murdering her. I don't think this moment was sealed but I do believe that if they would have had a relationship, he might've ended with killing Jan. Realistically I think Bigger should have tried to resuscitate her with CPR and compression.
