The reason I like this quote so much is because the depth and meaning behind it. At first you might think that this quote is simply a piece of propaganda, and in a way it is. But it has a hidden meaning that you have to read the book to find out. Through the early pages of 200, it explains much more about the world of 1984. The war that's going on between the three superpowers, Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia is mostly superficial. While there might be fighting in some places of the world, over labor force and the like, there is for the most part no fighting. If one conquered a major part of another's territory, this could expose each other and show that the enemy is really Human instead of the monsters that the governments portray them as. For this reason, no real fighting takes place. The war has in effect, turned into peace. There for the inner meaning of war is peace.

Doublethink, thought police, constant surveillance, never-ending war. Although this classic dystopian novel was written in 1949, Orwell's lean prose, finely honed political discourse, and penetrating images seem as fresh, as menacing, and as disturbingly prophetic as ever. With British equanimity, Simon Prebble accentuates every shade of gray in post-Blitzed-London. As Orwell depicts the totalitarian world led by Big Brother, Prebble is especially effective at subtly changing pace and giving weight to each character's most telling moments--Winston Smith's memories of childhood, Julia's use of sex as a political act, and more. Offering only two crushing choices, to betray or be betrayed, 1984 remains one of the most powerful and influential masterworks of twentieth-century literature.

I agree, 1984 is a classic and is generally held in high regard. The world that Orwell crafts is dark and grimy and it's great. 1984 remains one of the greatest books of the 20th century. This review reflects that review. Big Brother is watching.

In the book 1984, surveillance is a major aspect. This eye represents that your always being watched by the party and being judged. The eye is also made to look like a camera lens. Tele screens that watch you and other devices like microphones appear and are mentioned in the book regularly.

The conflict has a large impact on the story. The character, Winston is constantly questioning and doubting the party that runs Oceania, especially during the later part of the book. This leads him to eventually finding and working for the brotherhood. The Brotherhood is a secret organization trying to overthrow the party and Oceania. This thickens the plot and leads to some interesting developments.

Another quote in the book is "whoever controls the past controls the present and whoever controls the present controls the future." (Orwell 98) This quote has a lot of meaning and can be interpreted differently. One way to interpret it is that whoever controls the history can control what people think today. For example, what if written down it were the Axis powers who were good and the Allies who were bad during the second world war? That would completely change the views and people today. And whoever controls now controls the future.
