School counselors must advocate for students at individual, group, institutional, and societal levels and strive for “exemplary cultural competence” (ASCA, 2010, as stated in Abreu et. al, 2016). Therefore, school counselors have a responsibility to advocate for the rights, interests, and well-being of all students, regardless of cultural and social values, gender identity or sexual orientation, race, religion, or socioeconomic status. They must also work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to promote a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

School counselors must treat students with dignity and respect and promote academic, career, social and emotional development. They also must protect students' rights and provide interventions that are responsive to their needs (ASCA, 2019). These ethical standards ensure that school counselors deliver services in a manner that is fair, inclusive, and compassionate.
