Haiti was the first Latin American country to gain independence. In August 1791, 100,000 slaves revolted. Their leader was Toussaint L’Ouverture a former slave, he wasn't used to military matters, but he still became a skilled general. France soon sent 30,000 French troops to stop Toussaint from being in power. He agreed to end the revolution if the French would end slavery. The French soon
blamed him for planning another revolt. The French captured him and sent him to a prison where he passed. Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Toussaint’s lieutenant) continued the fight for independence and the end of slavery. On January
1, 1804, he declared Haiti an independent country.
