Written - 5

1. The snake heavily relates to the boys losing their innocence and being without an authority figure. All of the three boys could turn bad or dark, as mentioned in the foreshadowing question, and they are waiting for that time to strike. This could turn a boy into a savage or a terrible person, just from being bitten by the “beastie”.

2. -

3. Piggy’s glasses and their normal function is his aid to see, but they are put to use by lighting a fire in this chapter. Before being able to complete this task, though, Jack and his hunters steal the glasses from Piggy, Ralph, and their tribe. As a result of that, Piggy can’t see and they are unable to light the fire they need. In conclusion, Piggy’s glasses represent his intelligence and the science he uses, as well as in society and the people surrounding him.

4. The irony of the way the boy’s treat Piggy is his intelligence is what is keeping them well and alive. He is their best chance of survival and without his help, they would have no clue what to do. Piggy is also organized along with his intelligence, being an even stronger person to help. Due to human nature they learn to give Piggy respect because Ralph is the character that is more of an authority figure and Jack likes to pick a fight.

5. The irony of the boys and their fire is that it is a signal fire, therefore not an actual fire meaning to hurt people. However, this is a problem and it causes a fire that can't be tamed. This causes the death of one of the boys. This and the “drum-roll” represents a path of hardships and darkness for the boys, along with the bad consequences they have already encountered so far.
6. The events of the first two chapters do reveal some major themes of the novel. Some cliché ones are man vs nature and man vs society. With man vs society, Piggy is the ‘man' aspect with having to deal with Ralph and Jack, as well as the way they treat him.

Written - 4

The major characters, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack, are all boys with different personalities. Ralph’s age is revealed, as he is twelve years old, and he is more of the ‘jock and ladies man' type of guy. In other words, charismatic and athletic are excellent ways to describe him. Piggy is awfully a lot like his name, rather overweight and is called fat much throughout the chapter, has asthma, complains, and wears glasses. Piggy is more of a nerd than Ralph, who is the jock character. Jack is very serious and in order, with red hair as his main appearance. He can also be a tad brutal and might be known as a savage.

The author’s foreshadowing methods seem to take a dark turn and are very much seen as depressing. It is also foreshadowed that Piggy will get the blame for this dark turn to come. Most-likely later within the novel there will be an event that is not joyous, rather sad and melancholy.

The boys are excited and very glad to be free of a grownup’s watch over them and the age that they are shows that human nature is being free and not controlled by parents or other authority figures. Voting for the leader shows that they want to be accepted and into the click of other people, the human nature of not being left out or deprived of other people and how they feel about them.

-

The conch shell’s main purpose was to “call the children of assemblies”. This serves as a piece of sound that brings everyone together for a meeting every once in a while. It can also determine who speaks at a specific time at the meetings, holding an amount of significance on who can give their opinions and when. It has a significance of their power and their meeting being called to order.

Written - 5
1. Ralph starts to see that being a leader might be taken from him. He wants that position but he is now working to keep it. Their chance of finally being saved was ruined by Jack and his actions, therefore the order of priorities have been changed. Ralph's values are now also changed, to stand out as a leader and gain that from the other children and their attention.
2. Ralph talks about the previous fire that happened, as well as shelter and being able to use the lavatory. His general point and what he wants people to discuss is the beast. During this discussion, he tells on how he is scared of it. These points are so significant because Ralph is trying to get back his leadership position and have it set in stone before Jack convinces the children to vote him in instead.
3. -
4. Piggy's explanation that life is scientific is to have the fear that the boys have in their brains are due to their own imagination that it has created. There is no actual beast, they are just all paranoid due to what they have been told. The result of being told this is that the children have some relief and understanding of why their mind is telling them this.
5. -
6. As he starts talking, Simon expresses his feelings that the beast could possibly be a myth that does not exist in real life. After a lot of shouting and disagreements, he gets to finish his conversation. He ends this with, "...maybe it's only us." This expresses that the group might just be thinking this in their heads and it is not an actual creature.
7. The rules are so important to Ralph due to all of the boys stay within what he wants and it keeps their cooperation in check. These keep them working together in their group and society. Without these rules, there could be mass chaos and conflict within their group.
8. -

Written - 4
1. The "beast from air" is a person who was parachuting that is dead and flying in the air over the island. The group immediately saw the parachutist as a beast due to it bobbing in the air and casting a shadow on the mountain. Strangely enough, this is a symbol in the novel for adult life.
2. Sam and Eric's descriptions show how human psychology can get the best of ourselves. The boys highly overexaggerated saying about the beast, "it is furry, it has eyes, teeth, claws, wings and it chased them". They see these objects as physical and that those characteristics describe how a person is on the inside.
3. -
4. While walking to the castle, Simon was judging the beast. He often thought about how it couldn't keep up with Sam and Eric, but also left no tracks at all (due to being in a parachute). He has trouble believing this is a real creature and shows how what he thinks often differs from the boys. He likes to understand and think about what is said and why.
5. Ralph doesn't expect to counter the beast because he believes it is within their imaginations and that it is not real. He often wants to seem like the "big and bad" character, to be perceived as not afraid of anything.
6. -

Written - 3
1. - The purpose and effect of Jack's generosity is that he wants to gain control of the children and change the minds of the ones who are not on his side, such as Ralph and Piggy. At the same time, this shows the rest of the group that he is a kind and thoughtful leader and want to help the people that do not agree with him. The main reason he would do this would be to persuade Ralph and Piggy to join him.
2. This is an effective leadership tactic because the boys want to dance and they enjoy this activity. The children are less focused on other events that are taking place, such as being in Jack's tribe and hunting for food with him. Jack wants them to do the 'pig dance', which distracts them from Ralph and his ideas of a big storm coming. This also puts the attention back on Jack, as well as they listen to him. Such as the makeup did, this makes the boys excited and happy to be a part of their group.
3. The "beast" that the boys kill happens to actually be Simon, who believed that the beast was not real. All along he knew the truth and was trying to prove to them that it was their imagination. This taking place shows how the boys are way too fearful and afraid, jeopardizing their only chance of being saved.
4. -

Written - 3
1. Ralph and Piggy do not want to have anything to do with Simon's death, as they are doing their best to completely avoid it. Ralph thinks all mentions of civilization on the island is funny, as well as that he is still the leader and the boys will listen to him. Sarcastically speaking he says, 'I've got the conch' Piggy reacts due to realizing that Ralph is not as involved in civilization as much. He is needed to lead the children to rescue. Due to Simon's death, Ralph seems to be giving up on civilization, but Piggy is working to give him a reason and figure to look up to.
2. -
3. -
4. -
5. To my knowledge, the biguns understand that killing Simon was not worth it or reasonable. However, they attempt to justify killing him by saying he was an "it" and that Simon was merely the beast in disguise. The mentality of the group allowed them to be insane and want blood and killings. Jack's rash decisions could possibly get even more violent, which explains how they're half-relieved. He also explains that they did not kill the beast, confusing the children on the island, knowing merely that he killed Simon. This causes fear in the boys, worrying about a possible death of another child by a misunderstanding.
6. Signs of stress that are imminent is that the boys are thinking about what had happened the night before. When noises are heard and wrestling each other in their sleep, they are afraid. They are sensitive and afraid by Jack and his group of savages.
