After some class cancellations and strikes ,I had my first class. Although I have been working with this group since April , I must admit I was quite nervous. These students are not used to the pace of work that I propose and they complain quite often or simply refuse to work. They do not have internalize a rutine of work, and they are messy. For instance they move the benches and chairs as they like and sometines they group themselves looking at the window or around the heating. However the biggest problem are the cellphones. They use them constantly , and when I call their attention they leave it for a second, do the activity and take it again. The most difficult parte of the plan is el warm up. I lost several minutes asking silence, order, to sit down properly, to stop wandering around the classrom, to look at me or the board. Once we start , everything flows a bit better. These student refuse to speak in English except for two girls and two boys. The others mostly respond well but in Spanish. If I ask them to use English they stop talking and participating. They showed entushiaasm when they saw the activities I prepared and went to the front and they completed the activities but they remain in silence or they shake their heads refusing.Regarding the development of the class itself and the plan, I started to identify which activities they prefer and which they do not. Apart from speaking, they do not like reading or answering aloud or writing.( they use the tranlator) but they love drawing and they perform listening activities quite comfortably. They lasted more time than it was thought in doing each activity since they talk, make jokes ,chat among them. So,I they couldn´t complete some activities . I must re think the time I assign to each activity.

This class developed quite well. As long as i entered to the classroom I asked them to sit on their places in order to not loose time. I started with the warm up activity and the showed interest but continued answering in Spanish. I keep on asking them to try to speak English , I re say their answer in English. When was time to read answers they have written I went closer to their benches and some girls read them answer shyly (in a quite low voice) but in English ,I congratulated them , to improve their confidence.

The work dynamic continues well except that many of them say they do not know how to write, therefore they ask for help or for me to write in English, which they respond in Spanish. Otherwise, they quickly turn to the translator. This time, I could complete the whole plan and activities, however, 5 minutes before the bell rings they begin to put away their things and the noise begins, they get up and begin to line up to go out to the hall. The closing and greeting activity was impossible to carry out.

1. What teaching strategies did you use? Which ones were effective? Why / why not?

My strategy was to re-phrase, re- tell, repeat in English when they do not understand something. I also do use the same strategy when the answer in Spanish. I would say that it is not effective with all the students, of course, but it works with some of them who tries to speak in L2.

As it usually happens with the topic "Prepositions of movement" it results quite difficult for them. They are getting used to wait for something different every class. They check my box as soon as I enter to the classroom. This class was noisier than usual they were excited and moreover when they found the listening activity difficult. They started to complain, shouting, asking questions, or asking for answers o repetitions. On the other hand, they were very engaged with the pair activity in which they had to ask for directions to a classmate.Last activity was suspended since the preceptor entered with a cake to celebrate the birthday of a student. However it was in general a good class.

This class was presented as a continuity of the previous one. So at the very beginning when I asked them if they remembered the previous topic they started to complain. However I surprised myself because when they saw the drawing of the tourists they started to show some interest.It surprises me how, despite their age, they like my slightly childish drawings and posters. The activity of the sketch was very challenging for them (and I changed it several times to make it easier) However , with my help at the beginning they finally could solve it. It was revealing for them to realize they do not know the names of the strees or were they places or shops really are. The closure activity was , although a bit fast because they started to putting everything away, a succes . Some students played and had fun. The class was generally very good. How did the students react to your teaching, to the activities and the materials? How did they react to the lesson? As I mentioned they started complaining about the topic, but then my drawings and the material liked them , and seemed funny for them ,so they changed their attitude.

There are two students with severe behavioral problems at school (they come from another institution) and although they do not behave disrespectfully during class, they do not work, they use their phones and talk to each other. They are rebellious in their ways and show in their ways an air of superiority and displeasure at being there. Of course and unfortunately the atmosphere of the class changes, when they are there, and the mood of the students too.Despite them the class developed very well. The rest participated lively in the warm up activity giving their opinions, they continue speaking in Spanish except for two or three students who attend private classes or another two who try to say a few words. Their joy when they saw the real brochures, made me have contradictory feelings. I realized how far from that they are and on the other hand I was happy that they were engaged reading and looking at them.As every time they have to draw or design or make crafts they are willing to participate, and they made very nice brochures. The balance of this class was positive , I start to consider that if I mix both languages all the time I have 95% of the class involved, working actively and feeling that they also can take part. 1. What aspects of the lesson do you consider successful? Undoubtedly the real brochures were a succes. Working with them was fantastic for them Having access to real brochures from Disney, The Usa and Mexico was exciting for them.

After many classes I can imagine in advance what topics and tasks they won´t like or refuse to perform or simply ignore. Reading long texts, writing on their own are two of them. However I consider that I need to foster them and helpm them to learn and improve those skills. They participate of the reading activity although with reluctance like to getting rid of it knowing that perhaps another more beautiful activity will come. They prefer more fixed activities like filling in the gaps, matching sentences, answering tue or false. They are not used to working freely, solving problems by their own or making desicions. For that reason the participated actively with the rest of activities. They liked when they had to match the sentences , moreover when they recognized places of our town and also when the had to rate the discos were they go with friends. in general it was a good class.

Writing is an activity that these students do not like at all. I knew in advance that it was going to be difficult to tempt them, convince them, and finally that they accept do the activity. Asking them to enjoy it was not in my goals. It deserves a comment in the margin to highlight that nowadays, teenagers think or believe that they can decide what activity to do and what activity not to do. They do not care about grades or consecuences. They just they only refuse if they don't like it and I had to find other ways to make them write. So, I decided not to deepen in explanations, or theory about formats and writing benefits. I only ask them to do simple activities and I base myself on the product approach which involves modeling text, controlled writing activities, and guided writing activities to help students acquire language skills and improve their writing abilities. Luckily, I had good outcomes. Ater all it was a good class. 1. What do you find useful of this lesson that will help you plan the next one?I consider that it was an accurate choice on my part to work with the product approach when asking them to write.

I started to realize that these students prefer more fixed activities, they do not like feeling loose, without containment, in the sense that they prefer to do more traditional activities where what they must answer or do is more precise. They begin to ask "what should I do" "what should I respond" "what should I put here" "how should I start" if they feel that I am leaving them "alone" . This class which was similar to what they expect was succesful. There were many activities to complete, to answer, to fill, which give them a sense of safety. Finally the game,that although it was quite simple, always is a great moment. Even a student( a girl) who never wants to participate, never answers me, and she is always in a bad mood, and angry wanted to play. The challenge still is , to try to get them out of that comfort zone and make them work differently.

1. What aspects of the lesson require change / improvement? Surely, I shouldn´t give in when they insist saying they don´t understan in English but I feel sorry and guilty if I see them not participating.

The students wait for something different each class, and they make me know it. As soon as I arrive they start to dig through my box or dig through my papers to see what I brought. Sometimes they have absent tecahers the hour before of after me, and they come to school anyway.( perhaps it is the only subject they have in the morning) so, it is a great personal achievement knowing that even for a single hour they come to school. Regarding the topics , since all must be connected with tourism, it is being difficult to find different themes and topics so they do not get bored and mantain the interest. Not all the students are there because of the tourism orientation but because there were places in the institution but more because there was availability in tomorrow's shift.Regarding the class, it was a good class, an average class, without ups and downs , we start to have a good work routine, and they start to acquire work habits. There are some students that begin to dare to ask or call me at their desk to ask for help and that made me discover the big difference between the knowledge among them. Sometimes I left the classroom with an ambiguous feeling, I consider that the communicative approach is only fruitful for some students.

I commented a couple of classes before that there were two students with serious behabioural attitudes. One of them, is not coming to the school, presumably anymore. The other one changed his attitude and started to sit next to a girl who helps him, and work together. It was a positive change .1. Choose a moment that was important for the students during the lesson. Describe it and say why it was important It is crucial to mention these two students' attitudes. The girl who is willing to help ,collaborate and cooperate and the boy who is making huge efforts to insert himself into the group in the study and commit to his obligations.I congratulated them and highlighted this possitive change in front of all their mates.

Willing to try to include their cell phones in class, I designed an activity where they had to use them. It was going to be a challenge because of the Internet connection, because of the availability of cell phones and because of the ability to use them for a purpose other than using social networks. It is good to take risks,as long as you have a plan B. The class was a success, the students worked with enthusiasm, however I was surprised by how little they know how to use technology, other than their social networks exclusively. Another point to highlight is the the resistance of students to make drafts, to rewrite, to make more than one attempt at an activity until they obtain the final result. They only want to do it once, regardless of whether it has errors or whether the work can be improved. They refuse to review the activities. I will define this class as a kickstart.

I thought that it was going to be an easy class. To my surprise, they are not at all clear where the cities and provinces are in general. They gave me completely wrong answers, not even close. The quiz was planned to be an activity but as they started to complain about the difficulty , I turned it to a game. They accepted the challenge this way. What is the most difficult part of teaching this course is the evident difference of level of English among them. There are students that did not have Enghish at all until now. In general terms it was an easy class that cost them a lot. I should learn not to feel frustrated when I have to cut or change plans on the fly. 1. Choose a moment that was important for you during the lesson. Describe it and say why it was important. It made me very sad to realize how little these teenagers know about their country, but I also realized, although one might assume it because of the environment, how far these kids are from being able to travel and explore it.

This class was a continuation of the previous one, and it could have been difficult but fortunately , having worked with comparatives ,helped them finally. They still complain about the amount of material, exercises, and work to do. They aim to do one or two exercises per class and nothing more,so I am calling their atention all the time. What tires me the most is to be speaking in a super loud tone of voice to call their attention or to cover their talk. I achieve it because I notice that if I speak softer they start to chat, use their cell phone, laugh and lose concentration. However, I finished the class with no energy. However, I strted to feel a nice atmosphere among us.I think they started to like me, they like my work and my dedication, I noticed it in students who used to do almost nothing or who are more committed, and curious.

This was the last class of this topic, quite long. They worked well. Several of them understand the dynamics of work in general, so they are already organized quite well and are autonomous. There is a student , a girl, who still does not work. or rather, just copies from her mates by filling out photocopies. I noticed her, but she is always serious, in a bad mood, angry I do not know why. I heard her saying I don´t understand to a mate and I see the other one explaining to her. I waited a couple of minutes, and then I offered her my help. As ussual she said no in a bad way but I sat next to her anyway. I stayed with her explaining all the topic again. I hope she starts to get closer and get involved slowly. 1. Describe this lesson in terms of a metaphor:

It´s been difficult for me to complete all the steps of the planning las classes. It´s hard for me to be aware of each part of the planning all the time, what I should say next, and trying not to forget. There are always things left undone or that results changed. It frustrates me because I don't know if that's wrong with my performance. Sometimes I would want not to have to follow a fixed plan and feel myself freer. However, I consider that classes go well. I percieve a sense of order within the ocational chaos of work. My strategies work most all the time, and there are no problems in the classroom. Stuendts can be noisy or talkative, and not very organized but they are respectful, kind and funny. I enjoy coming to this school. 1. I have been noticing that although this course has Tourism orientation, these students have no knowledge about geography. I usually have to stop and say where the places mentioned are , even the most well kwown ones which I supossed they were going to know about. At least the location within the continent or country. So although I tried to activate their previous knowledge very often I had to tell them some information in Spanish to be able to continue working. Another activity that i noticed that is difficult for them, is to interpret graphics with information. This pyramid , quite simple, resulted hard for some of them. So , I had to explain it more than once and finally in Spanish.

I started to percieve some tiredenss among the students. The majority of them are in this school not becasue they are interested in Turism but because of the places available in the courses. Therefore, it is difficult to maintain them engaged. On the other hand, as we progress, it becomes more evident the little knowledge not only about English but geography or general culture.They do not know the location of cities, provinces, or some very famous or icinoc places or facts of our country. I have to stop the flow of the class to say where Rosario is , for instance, or Iguazu falls. This class was particularly dofficult for them but I am not willing to lower the level or do only small jobs to fulfill. My goal is for them to learn and awaken a little interest in them

Teaching in secondary school is like riding a roller coaster. Today, the students showed themselves enthisthic and engaged. The participated a lot and wanted to work without the need for me to ask for silence or collaboration. The activity of the pyramid .although quite simple, liked them. They discussed among them their answers and opinions. When was time to work with the numbers they were engaged and to my surprise, the entire class was in silence and attentive to listening.1. Include a photo of a moment in the lesson, or a task students did, a picture from the board or any other lesson component you would like to share, and describe it.I have chosen some of their productions, obviously , I have a lot more. I think they show the dedication, and commitment. I knew that some people didn't do it or did it without any effort. but I decide to stay with these attitudes that encourage me to continue.

Some topics seem to be very distant for them in terms of possibilities, resources and even goals or dreams. They show their astonishment and they ask if those things are real. For instance, they did not know anything about DOMOS, and less that they were something related to tourism or ecology. The classes themselves are going perfectly well, in terms of work, respect, atmospere of the classroom, routines, and I feel complete engaged with this group. They welcome me happily and we have excellent treatment, we laugh, we make jokes and we work very well. Unfortunately, with respect to the language itself, they have many difficulties and it is very difficult for them due to the lack of study, correlation of previous years and continuity of teachers.

This class turned out a bit difficult for them. Perhaps the vocaburaly or the texts. I must adjust the time assigned for each activity, they need much more time to solve the activities. Classes continuing going well. Unfortunately, this is the only classroom with no curtains so, it is very difficult to watch videos. I do my best and they, too. Th library of the school would be useful, but it is usually booked or occupied.They liked the text of the Mapuches, they had no idea.However, every time they have to contribute with ideas such as "what would you do for", or "what would you do if". It is almost impossible for them not only to write them in English, but what is worse, to think about them in Spanish. What would they do in that situation, what solution or what other idea would they contribute or change. They don't like that type of activities at all.

Lately, the students had a day of coexistence where they worked with the new academic regime. They began to show concern about their grades and the completion of their different assignments and jobs. These students are very used to doing grammar exercises exclusively in the area of English, so my classes have been difficult for all or most of them. They have not found many mechanical type activities, in which they only have to perform an exercise several times in the same way. As soon as they find an activity like this, they do it with enthusiasm , since it is their comfort zone. I would even say they enjoy them.1. Choose an audio / video segment from the lesson, and reflect on what is viewed or heard.

This class was interesting to me from the beginning because while researching I was surprised by the large number of people with disabilities who travel alone and also by the facilities they need and sometimes don't have then it became interesting for them too. It is still very difficult for them to identify, express, think or evaluate posibilities when they are asked to say solutions, options, alternatives. even more so if they also have to express them in English.

I arrived at the last class feeling very nervous and anxious like the first day, I couldn't believe that this exhausting process was ending. As for the class itself,it was normal, but a bit difficult the activity 2 which they couldn´t solve the pattern of grammar easily. As for the reading, I read the text because , they still refuse to read aloud. I need to adjust times, and level of dificulty of activities. Some of them finish them so quickly but the majority of them have very little knowledge of the language. The positive point is that students ask for help, call me to their benches, ask questions to try to solve them. Unfortunately using their mother tongue ,of course. This practicum period has left me with a lot of learning.
