Metaphor?

It is first surmised by Picard that Dathon communicates by metaphor; that each thing he says is a poetic comparison that is meant to symbolize a greater meaning. While this is a functional description of the Tamarian language style, we quickly learn that metaphor doesn't quite cover it.

Deanna suggests that image seems to be very important for the Tamarians--a sentiment that is accurate, but, as Bogost says, paints the Tamarian language in a more vain light and fails to capture the depth of meaning of the language's nature.

Allegory?

Allegory seems to encompass more of the heart of the Tamarian language--it is less about 2-D metaphors or images, and more about meaning. For someone to understand what a Tamarian is saying, they must first understand its mythemes. Allegories provide a relatively solid description but miss the mark on explaining the apparent depth of their language (i.e. how the Tamarians were able to amass such technological understanding and innovation).

Strategy.

While the Tamarian language does have elements of metaphor, imagery, and allegory, none of these words are able to capture the complexity wrought by the Tamarian's use of so few words as strategy. For it is seen in the exchange between Dathon and his first officer how the former conveyed his plan in so few words, and yet these few words were able to share with his team what he intended on doing with Picard and guide the actions of his Tamarian team aboard the ship.

As Bogost so aptly puts it, "'Strategy' is perhaps the best metaphor of all for the Tamarian phenomenon the Federation misnames metaphor. A strategy is a plan of action, an approach or even, at the most abstract, a logic."

For anyone who understands the "why" behind a Tamarian's choice of words, it provides nothing but a clear, logical meaning. Even when the syntax seems scattered on the surface, those who speak the Tamarian language can glean the depth and profoundness of so few words. As a result, what may seem random and absurd is really sound and sensible and can convey more than even the most pragmatic, descriptive language could.
